...this feels like a turn of the century way of simply saying, "this sucked".

That's what it seems like to me, as well.

With an added hint of "I didn't understand it, so it sucked."

That's a really fascinating piece, thanks for sharing! It's amusing how he insults the English play but talks up the American actors.

And who is this "Chaurelin" he writes about? :P

Well, if the NYT is anything like The Times (London), I can quite understand this attitude! Far too low-brow, m'dears.

The play probably wasn't very good, but then the musical also had its critics, and was revamped numerous times - and that was ninety years later! I think TSP is just a guilty pleasure, and always has been, from the days when reading 'potboilers' was frowned upon, through to its cult readership today. It will always be one of my favourite books.
