Have you ever had a friend who was doing something that you don't really approve of, but you know your friend, you know the issues their dealing with and you know why they're doing what they're doing? Yes, you're right. I wonder if empathy covers what you're saying, though empathy could, perhaps exist alongside judgement, though I doubt it would be true empathy thoug... I don't know. There's an ASL sign that says it... the pointer fingers pop up like "understand" which is like a lightbulb going on over the head... except the sign is made heart to heart or gut to gut... like I understand fully, deeply.
The kind of understanding that you described is what I strive for, but in real life, I'm lucky if I can get to compassion most of the time. It's so easy to get burned. It's so easy to be scared. I love when I feel it from other's though. I think that's one thing I really like about you. It's nice not to feel judged; just accepted and felt with.

I think you definitely have to have empathy in order to understand. I think sympathy contains some kind of judgement to it, but not true empathy... anyway that's really cool about the ASL thing. I love the way other cultures describe things sometimes.
