Mion is the oldest of the Sonozaki twins, as well as being the next head of the family and one of the main protagonists. At birth, she had the tattoo of a demon engraved into her back, and the ‘Mi’ in her name actually stands for ‘demon’. Even though she is shown as evil in the second arc, that is actually her twin sister Shion’s doing. In reality, Mion is pretty much the only main character who never attempts to kill anyone in any of the shown arcs. Ever since she was a kid, Mion has been brought up to be the next great head of the village, and is even separated from her sister and parents to be raised by her grandmother. Still, she makes friends easily, and even established a little after school club that consisted of herself, Rika Furude, Rena Ryuugu, and Satoko Hojou. She was also friends with Satoshi when he was there, and quickly befriended Keiichi Maebara once he moved into town. She and the others accepted him into their club, and Mion even formed somewhat of a crush on him.
In the first arc, Mion is shown to have a secretive, deadly side, growing serious whenever Oyashiro-sama and Satoshi are brought up. However, this is all just part of Keiichi’s paranoia, and is actually quite concerned about him and wants for him to get better until she’s beaten to death with a baseball bat at the end. In the second arc, Mion is once again seen to have a darker, demonic side, but this is all Shion. In realistic, Mion locked up in a cell, and can only beg for her friends’ lives as they are murdered one by one. Even at the end, she tries to convince Shion that the Sonozaki family wasn’t behind the disappearances and murders, and that Shion had to have faith in her. Unfortunately, she was once again killed by falling to her death into a pit. In almost every other scenario, Mion is killed by the gas released by Takano in her men. However, in the second to last arc in Higurashi Kai, she tries with her friends to change fate and help Rika escape being murdered. She then sees that Keiichi is killed as they try to escape, and sacrifices herself in hopes that the others can escape as well. In the final arc, Mion’s leadership skills are put to the ultimate test as she and her friends take on Takano and her men. The game club triumphs at last, and they all make it out alive. Mion was about ready to sacrifice herself in this arc as well, as she stands in front of her friends and is ready to take a bullet from Takano. However, this never happens, as Hanyuu steps in front of Mion so that all her friends can live on.
It is hinted that Mion does indeed go insane in at least one version of the events, as she kills her friends out of jealousy for being close to Keiichi. However, the player of the visual novels never gets a chance to play this out. Also, in the very last arc of the first season, Mion is suspected by Rena to have given up the bodies that Rena chopped up. She is beaten almost to death, but manages to live on thanks to Keiichi. However, everyone is killed later on, and Mion’s ghost ends up possessing Shion in order to find the proof that she is the heir to the Sonozaki house.

Mion has a very strong personality. One of her main qualities is that she is an excellent leader, as she is head of her game club as well as class representative and next head of the Sonozaki household. She is very responsible when she has to be, since she puts off having fun to work for her family as well as to carry out her duties as a Sonozaki. However, Mion also has a lazy side to her; an example of this is when Rena explains that, although Mion is an excellent cook, she is simply too lazy to do it most of the time.
Another key quality is that she refuses to back down from a challenge and gives it her all to win. In her game club, one of the top rules is that you win no matter what, and use whatever means necessary in order to do so. Even if her methods involve cheating, Mion does whatever she can in order to win in her group’s competitions, and becomes a sore loser if she doesn’t come out on top. This is also demonstrated outside of the clubroom, particularly during the second to last and last arcs. She comes up with brilliant strategies so that she and her friends can win out over Takano’s group, and if they are backed into a corner, Mion does whatever she can to ensure that her friends will survive. This usually comes down to her being willing to take a bullet for them, and in at least one scenario she has.
Upon first meeting her, Mion seems like the regular tomboyish sort of character. She’s loud, she’s crude, and often she claims that she should have been born a boy. However, there are two sides to the coin, and secretly Mion can actually be very girly and cute. If Keiichi does end up giving the doll to her, she blushes and tries to laugh it off anyway, but still shows that she can be girly.

This often falls on Keiichi, and boy does Mion enjoy punishing him. The punishment game can range from drawing on someone with permanent marker to dressing them up to making them do something humiliating. This usually just comes down to public humiliation, although it can also end up harming the loser, such as when they are forced to taunt the teacher or principle until they get beaten up. Mion’s extremely dark side, however, only comes out when she has to act the part of the Sonozaki heir. When this happens, she becomes very cold and calculating, doing whatever her grandmother asks her to. This even involves forcing her own sister to tear off her fingernails. However, even when this does occur, Mion is not above pity. When Shion rips off her fingernails, Mion does the same out of sympathy for her sister, and then threatens to kill her grandmother unless she allows Shion and her crush to be together.
Lastly, Mion is extremely loyal to her friends and family. She’ll stick up for them until the end, even if this means helping them hide bodies or take a bullet for them. Even when Shion is about ready to kill her, Mion still tries to make her see reason and doesn’t attempt to fight her. When she finds out that a friend has been hiding a dark secret from her, she’ll just feel bad about not being trustworthy enough for her friends to confide in her.

Mion was actually born Shion, the younger twin. When they were young, however they got switched around and Mion was branded with a demon tatoo. Also, Mion carries around an airsoft pistol, but never uses it. she's more into using her martial art skills to fight.

The first thing she felt after the sting of the bullet was a coldness that ran all over her body. This was it. She was really going to die.
'Well...' she thought as her mind slipped away, 'as long as the others managed to escape, this is worth it...'
After the coldness came darkness, and then, surprisingly, a chilling wetness that penetrated her clothes and even her skin. Eyes snapping open, Mion found herself lying on the ground, gazing up at the blue sky. Sky? No...this was something else...
"Wait...I'm...alive?" Sitting up, Mion brushed her bangs away from her eyes and looked down at her clothes. Sure enough, they were completely soaked, and in the middle of her chest was a bloody hole. However, when she prodded it, she discovered that there was no wound. Her skin was completely unmarked. "I really am alive."
Gasping, Mion suddenly sprung to her feet, looking around. If she survived, then perhaps... "KEI-CHAN!" After a moment, however, her shoulders slumped, and her head bowed. No, there was no way he could be alive. She herself had seen the light flicker out in his eyes, and had felt the pulse in his wrist coming to a stop. Biting her lip, Mion's shoulders trembled slightly as she willed herself not to cry. With new determination, she raised her head. Even if Kei-chan wasn't alive anymore, there was still a chance that the others were. She had to find them no matter what and make sure they were all OK.
"Shion! Rika-chan!" Mion cupped her hands around her mouth as she yelled, looking around for her friends and sister. The odd stares she was getting from the locals went unnoticed. "Satoko! Rena! Answer me if you can hear this!!"
No answer ever came, though, and Mion lowered her hands to her sides. Well, if they couldn't respond, then it was time to take a different approach. Looking around once again, she targeted the closest passing person and ran over to them. "Excuse me! Hold on a sec!" She came to a halt in front of them, not intending to move until she got answers. "I'm looking for a group of people, and I need to know if you've seen them." She described the main features of all of them. However, the person just shrugged his head and moved on. Mion sighed in aggitation, but squared her shoulders and simply went on to the next person. She wouldn't give up. Not until she knew for certain that the rest of her friends were safe.
