Author’s Note: This is my first fanfic yay. I am writing a larger Hermione/Sirius story but won’t be posting till it’s all written so I thought a drabble series would be a good way to introduce myself on the fanfiction scene :D

The last TimeTurner sat heavy in Hermione Granger’s hand. She had been so sure that they had all been destroyed. She remembered watching in horror as the case shattered and all those wonderful golden miracles fall to the floor and smashed into so many useless pieces.

But here it was. One last remaining hourglass on a long chain left hanging and forgotten around the neck of Lily Potter’s statue. Five years too late.

With this she could change everything. Save those who had died. Fix the mistakes they had made in that last search for the soul pieces, she could take back that kiss that inevitably broke Ron’s heart.

Terrible things happen to those who meddle with time. Miniver’s words rang like the tolling of a bell in her mind. Yes she could change things, save her friends… but at what cost? The war was won, things were calm and Harry was happy; sort of.

And there it was. Harry had Ginny and he had his friends and Molly loved him like a mother would… but somehow he was all alone. His last living link to his parents was dead before he ever had the chance to live. At least Remus had managed to pass on his knowledge and wisdom to Harry before he died but Sirius… he had been too stir-crazy to be the godfather James had meant him to be…

As she looked down at the TimeTurner her mind worked quickly and carefully.  A practice honed over years of Hogwarts dangers… Sirius had only been stunned not killed when he fell into the Veil of Death… Maybe… No, when he fell in he would have died immediately, as was the way of the Veil but…

All afternoon Hermione sat on her bed with a pad and paper scribbling down ideas, equations, spells. She scratched out and scrunched up paper throwing it this way and that as her mind worked the problem.

If she wanted to save him she would have to take him in the moment before he fell into the Veil. Seconds… Split seconds… Was it possible? And even if she managed to save him she couldn’t just dump him back at Harry’s side; that could change the whole outcome of the war!

But what if… The war was over now. His name had been cleared years ago. He could heal and become himself again… Whoever he was before he was arrested, before everything. No, he would never completely heal and he would never be who he was, but he could be better, stronger and together he and Harry could recover properly.

She looked down at the final list of equations and spells she would need and picked up the TimeTurner again. It wasn’t heavy any more, it was light as a feather but somehow now it glowed warm in her hand. Something deep inside felt right and the tiny hourglass agreed.
