Headcanoned Background and Story

This Gumi comes from a world of humans and demons. In this case, demons being closer to humanoid ogres or monsters rather than the enemy of god or messengers of hell and the like. (Though some humans would consider them to be) They generally stay in their own separate communities fearing or hating the other, having violent conflicts at times. Demons are stronger, more agile, and dexterous than humans. Some have other abilities. They also look similar aside from the horns and vibrant hair color. Full blooded demons have large horns, possibly tails and wings, and a rougher appearance to them. Their skin is patterned in areas. For some reason, there are fewer demons than humans, probably due to something like a longer life span, violent tendencies, or the ability to live in harsher climates.

Anyone with even a drop of demon blood in them is considered a demon by human society’s standards. On the flip-side, demons consider them human because of that drop of human blood. Half-demons faced all kinds of prejudice and generally don’t fit in anywhere. Horns, wings, tails, spotted skin, strange hair, or some mix color points them out. Sometimes, a human couple can have a half demon looking child if somewhere up the family tree, there was a demon coupling. Many children are considered illegitimate despite not actually being so.

Gumi has some demon blood in her, shown by her horns and green hair. Orphaned or abandoned at a very young age, she found herself on the streets of a European neighborhood. (Leaning towards somewhere in France) That was when she started to learn how to survive on her own. Being orphaned and alone was bad enough, but Gumi was part demon. For a while, she was part of a pack of street urchins, mostly filled with half-demons, but the group broke apart when someone in their ranks ratted them out during a port warehouse heist. The place went up with flames. Some kids died. Others were arrested. Gumi barely escaped.

Not even having the half-demons on her side, Gumi wandered the streets on her own. She took the insults, looks, and sneers in stride, keeping a collect expression on her face. Pickpocketing, swindling, gambling, tricks, and other shadier activities kept her alive.

The half-demon girl eventually wound up at a casino with connections to a crime group. After the Big Boss happened to see her in a street alley earning money through her street tricks and gambling, she was offered a job. She never considered refusing it. Hunger was a good motivator, and Gumi knew the human man didn’t care about the demon girl. She didn’t care about him either. Neither person had to care about the other as long as they both got what they wanted.

She grew up at the Crossbones Casino. Her responsibility was the poker table. Criminal activity was handled (mostly) by others. She also sung at the lounge when the tables were slow and did some side jobs, but she made her living as dealer. Patrons would come in at a chance to best the demon dealer girl. The casino drew in many people and even more cash. She rarely lost, and it was usually when Big Boss got paid a large sum for her to lose on purpose. There was quite a title to being one to beat her at poker.

Gumi would say that her life was fine. As long as she had a roof over her head and food to eat, things were good enough.

That is until he entered the casino and her life.

Pierre (for the purposes of this story) was a quiet, polite spoken, slightly clumsy human who had come in with a group of his friends. They sat down at her table and started playing. There was the usual rowdiness and lewd comments from his friends, but Pierre kept to himself. Suspecting something, Gumi started to flirt with him, trying to reveal what he was up to. The man looked up at her and smiled. Then he complemented her on her green hair and how it looked nice with her horns.

At the time, Gumi laughed at the all too obvious attempt at flattery to help his game, but when she looked at the man’s eyes, there wasn’t a hint of dishonesty. But how? There was no way Pierre could be sincere. Gumi’s focus remained on him as she studied him. What was he thinking? What did he hold in his hand? Did she need to get a better hand?

Suddenly, Gumi, the demon dealer girl one had to be lucky to beat... lost.

Pierre’s friends cheered, convinced the man to buy them around, and they exited to go to the bar. He looked back at Gumi, smiled and waved before he too left. The casino was stunned but no one more than Gumi herself. Pierre came again a few days later, alone this time. He spoke up a little more, and Gumi held a conversation, being coy and a little flirty. She planned to use it as a distraction. Pierre won again. She won all her games against others, so why this guy? Maybe he wasn’t a human after all and had some demon power. Or there was some spirit at work. There had to be something.

One night, Pierre invited her to dinner and dessert. Gumi wasn’t one to turn down free food, and she thought she’d use the opportunity find a way to turn the tables on him. Maybe she’d steal something and discover his cheat because there was no way this could be happening to her. The pretend attraction was easy enough. She met with him after work again another night. He paid her sweet compliments that had to be lies, though she couldn’t tell just by looking at him. She gave him the pet name “Pierrot.” She ate with him another, then went out to a date, then walked the streets, spent the night... all to be able to beat Pierre, she told herself. There was nothing personal about this. She was using him just like he was doing the same to her. Pierre had to be. She was just a demon girl to him that was pretty enough to show around and easy to earn money from; that’s how it was. Any other pretty girl would be way out of his league.

Though every time they played poker at the casino, Gumi had more and more trouble reading Pierre. Gumi almost decided to stop see him all together; she could ask someone to “deal” with him. On one hand, she started to enjoy the outings. On the other hand, she hated Pierre and believed he was going to destroy her. Rumors of the demon dealer losing regularly spread around. She lost that pull that brought people to Crossbones Casino.

Big Boss eyed Gumi, which only reminded her of the others who worked under him, the ones that “disappeared” without a trace. The way her games had been going, she didn’t believe she could win against Pierre, so her situation would get worse... possibly angering the Big Boss despite the years of near flawless service. Gumi needed to get rid of Pierre and the problem completely. She had no attachments to him after all. It was all part of the game.

She had the opportunity to kill Pierre the next time she spent the night at his simple apartment. Gumi waited for him to fall asleep and planned to stab him. It didn’t happen; she couldn’t bring herself to do it. She only hovered over Pierre with a knife for hours before she tossed the offending thing out the window. It had to be making him lose then.

Pierre arrived at the casino again the next morning, and Gumi was waiting for him. Gumi was determined to beat him with every trick she knew and restore her image. It was important to her survival. Still... she fumbled in her bluffs. She fumbled in making the perfect hand. She fumbled in cheating; she was caught! No matter what she tried, nothing could be done! All she could do is try to play blindly and hope she’d win. And then after one cheat, Pierre raised her bet with all the money he had brought with him that day though he knew the King card she had in her hand was fake. Gumi ran with the sudden gift she got, able to play up the flirtation and act like a little girl happy about how she won.

Her boss was satisfied; his gaze strayed from her and back to the casino in general. This was over. Pierre left, and Gumi won a lot of money. But, she didn’t feel right. Gumi handed the casino’s share of the winnings over to Big Boss and waited for her shift to be over.

When she left the casino that time, Pierre was waiting outside and asked about what was going on, the night before and all through the game. Angry, she told him what losing to him did to her, how she couldn’t read him, how a stupid human was going to ruin her life. She didn’t want to feel indebted to someone either. She tossed what money she had at him, said she’d get more from her apartment, and told him to take it and leave.

Pierre laughed, picked up the fallen cash, handed it back to her, and asked why didn’t she these things were happening earlier. He could stop coming by the casino, and they could meet somewhere else. Gumi asked about the money. Pierre said he didn’t care.

Gumi finally realized what “power” he had over her, why a human could see through her. The truth was embarrassing. Pierre hadn’t been bluffing or lying about anything. She fell in love with her opponent, who truly liked her. Could that be it? After not caring about others, not being cared about, did she actually want to be with someone? Was her pretending all this was business really just a lie, her own bluff to herself?

After talking about it some more, Gumi didn’t mind the idea of being in love with and trusting another. They would only play poker outside the casino, and in the casino, he would play another game. As it turns out, Pierre didn’t do so well at Blackjack.

Gumi comes from post song.

Skills and Abilities

From her demon side, Gumi has sharp reflexes and dexterity, allowing her to flick cards and do tricks. Gumi’s also a little stronger than she looks, though she’s far from what a full blooded demon is like. Some humans can out power her, and two working together will be too much for her to take on at once. She’s also a fairly decent running, a skill she needed to escape the police or angry victims of her pickpocking and swindling exploits.

She also has good eyesight and can see minute changes or actions someone does to help judge when one is lying or hiding something. (Think Apollo Justice from Ace Attorney) However, this gets harder to do the closer she is to a person. It’s a mental block she needs to learn how to overcome.

Gumi also has a fairly decent voice that people seem to enjoy. She also knows a few languages she picked up while working at the casino and on the streets.

Appearance

Gumi has green hair and horns, showing her demonic blood. It’s something she doesn’t exactly take a lot of pride in as they’ve caused her trouble all her life. Her hair is kept short and out of the way of her eyes and of those who would try to grab it while she’s escaping. Still, it looks a bit wild with fly aways and strands that drape and stick out unevenly. Gumi also has bright blue eyes.

She has facial markings: four diamonds above, four dots below her left eye, but they are actually painted on everyday and have a resistance to most liquids. Gumi started to paint them on after joining the casino as part of the demon dealer image as she doesn’t actually have any patterning. They are permanent birth marks patterning. (Because that's more fun to have them that way.)

Shorts with a chain, pinstripe shirt with rolled up sleeves, halter top, tie, tall socks held up with garters, gloves, and low heel shoes are her usual dress. Keeping it looking nice is one of the few things she does pay attention to. It helps her dealer image and makes her seem more imposing. She may have faint scars hidden by gloves and socks to avoid giving her opponents any ideas about her or try to find a weak point. Gumi has often cross-dressed in her escapades or even just for the hell of it. One will be hard pressed to get her into a skirt, much less a dress... unless she can gain something from it.

She also often smells of myrrh and frankincense, the incense used to freshen up the casino. No one wants to gamble in a room smelling of too much sweat, smoke, and alcohol.

Personality

Gumi is a little hardened from her time on the streets. She lived worrying about herself and that’s all. Trust was something easily broken, especially for an outcast like her. Gumi was generally pleasant to people; being rude would only end up with broken bones or worse. She even did some acts of charity especially for the hungry, but she mostly kept others at a distance. When she teamed up with someone, it was for a personal gain and only lasted as long as it was beneficial to her. It wasn’t as if she did it out of malice; she’s neutral in reality. It’s just a business deal. This has started to change since meeting Pierre, but trust and having others care about her is a new, albeit pleasant, thing.

The flirtatious attitude is often when she’s trying to get an angle or create a barrier she could control. Actual interest isn’t there, and if things start going too far and she judges it pointless, she’ll break it off. When she actually interested in someone, the flirtation drops. Gumi is less guarded and even a bit uncertain.

Morality is also a very vague thing. Gumi doesn’t like to place a lot of things in “right” or “wrong.” Those judgments seem to cause a lot more trouble than they’re worth; she’d know being considered an abomination to a lot of people from both sides. There is a lot of grey area for Gumi. She doesn’t put much faith in religion either.

Underneath that calm, collected, and playful exterior is someone who is trying to protect herself when no one else will care. She also finds that the closer she is to a person, the harder it is for her to bluff and lie against them. She’s opened up and let them past her defenses. She can bluff against someone she cares for, but in her head, she can’t. Manage to get under her skin enough, Gumi will get flustered, drop the coolness, make mistakes, become uncertain, and even appear comical.

As for fears, Gumi doesn’t have many. She does show caution toward people and fire. Sometimes her caution towards people can border on paranoia if someone gets the upper hand on her. Then she takes things a little more personal and holds on to figuring out how she can recreate a balance of power. The longer it goes on, the more personal it becomes to her, and she’ll grow frustrated and even angry.

For some miscellaneous traits, she doesn’t have a lot of materialistic value. As such, if she steals, it’s usually for the end results of food or lodging. Food, she likes much more than any material object and has a fondness for pastries, sweets, and carrots (of course). Gumi does like to sing, though she’d never consider a career in it. Somehow, she seems more relaxed when doing so. But really, Gumi wouldn’t want to deal with the fame and the pressures she imagines a singer must face. Being a dealer seems much simpler.

Misc. (things noticed in the PV)

Calendar - French

Magyar Posta stamp - Hungry Postal Service

Carta d'Armenia - Armenian Burning Paper
Famous throughout Europe, these amazing papers, which are exactly as they were in the 16th century, remove odors from any space with their frankincense and myrrh scent. Simply take one paper, fold into an accordion shape and light one end, then, blow out flame. You will see that the paper reacts like incense and because of the accordion fold you should be able to stand it on its side. Burn for approximately 5 minutes to remove odors (staleness, dampness or mold, cooking odors). You will smell the fragrance as well as a slight scent of burning paper. Always place on a glass or ceramic surface (Plate or bowl) to burn. Will cause ash which is easily washed off. Can also be used as scented papers placed directly in drawers or closets. 25 scented papers per box.

[Not the text in the PV, but “Armenian Paper” is mentioned along with some other text that makes it a likely match for what’s being reference... or just thrown in the PV for background texture]
