Stein heard the doorbell and quickly jumped to his feet, trotting out to the front just as the bell rang again. Was it really Vanessa, or was it someone else. Like Spirit? That might be fun, too.
Maybe he could dissect Spirit again, for old time's sake. He was divorced now, after all.
He pulled the door open and beamed when he saw Vanessa.
"You did come!" he said cheerfully. The hallway behind him was utterly dark, though there was the faint glow of a computer monitor or television far, far down the hall behind him.
He could tell she was nervous, and he reached out to put a hand on her shoulder and draw her down the hall, oblivious to the fact that it was so dark in his house.
"This is my place," he said. "My lab and also where I live. Unless you mean... it's on the outskirts of Death City, Nevada."
