Montgomery Scott: Engineer and Matchmaker

Spock took in a few calming breaths, exercising his control to keep himself from physically attacking his captain. Jim was opposite him, arguing with him about the proper course of action that should be taken in a diplomatic case. His eyes were blue and bright, his cheeks flushed an appealing red, and Spock felt the usual twinge of complete and utter frustration with the man in front of him. He’d never known anyone who could push his incredible Vulcan control like Jim Kirk.

Once the argument was over, Spock walked across the bridge and sat down, casting a look over his shoulder to where Jim was sprawled in his captain’s chair, chest rising and falling with exhilaration. He was sure his captain enjoyed their arguments, like they were a sort of adrenaline rush for him. Spock found no such reward from their constant bickering, and always felt weary and a little confused following an argument.

“Happy Valentines’ Day,” Scotty said, walking onto the bridge with a smile.

Jim turned, eyes lighting up with amusement as he fixed his eyes on him. “It’s tomorrow Scotty.”

“It’s not today?” Scotty said, looking suddenly confused as Sulu and Chekov shot him looks.

“I believe humans celebrate the Terran holiday of St Valentine on the 14th, which is tomorrow,” Spock said across the bridge. Scotty’s shoulders slumped and he looked faintly embarrassed. Spock questioned his intelligence for a moment, but he understood that it was hard to keep track of anything whilst in space.

“Oh, well, I’ll save my surprise fer tomorrow then,” Scotty said, rubbing the back of his neck.

“Surprise?” Sulu asked, sounding wary. “Please don’t dress up as a cupid.”

“Seconded,” Uhura said.

“Thirded,” Jim said with a grin.

“I’m not dressing up. You’ll see,” Scotty said, a smile of satisfaction and secrecy on his face as he edged back toward the turbo lift.

Spock frowned for a moment at the strange behaviour before sliding his eyes over to look at Jim, who quickly averted his blue eyes to the bridge floor. Spock almost sighed.

Spock didn’t celebrate Valentine’s Day. He found the entire thing illogical and like other holidays humans observed, there was no real relation between the reason for celebrating and the way it was celebrated. Spock found Halloween to be most confusing holiday. He was always bewildered when people dressed up in costumes which had no link to the original meaning of the day.

The next morning Spock hadn’t spared another thought about Scotty or what day it was as he readied himself for shift, his stomach twisting in on itself as he thought about another long shift with Jim.

His door chime went and Spock quickly adjusted a strand of black hair in the mirror before ordering for the door to open.

Scotty stood there, rocking back and forth on the balls of his feet with a wide grin on his face.

“Mr Scott? May I help you?”

“I just thought I’d wish you a Happy Valentine’s Day.”

Spock raised an eyebrow. “I find the holiday illogical.”

“Course yer do. Anyway, check your messages on yer PADD when you get a moment.”

Before Spock could question the odd request, Scotty had turned and left, walking along the corridor with a spring in his step.

Spock walked slowly over to his PADD and sure enough, there was a message from the engineer blinking on the rectangular screen.

Spock opened up the document quickly.

Dear Enterprise crew,

Happy Valentine’s Day. For the past several weeks I have been working on a piece of software that accurately pairs up crew members based on hobbies, intelligence, physical appearance and more. I have used most of the information within the crew files to do this and I hope the software provides a happy distraction today. I have compiled a list of the top ten well matched pairs with their percentages for you to peruse, and as you will see, some crew members have been matched more than once. You may also, if you wish, use this software to find the rating for you and a particular crew member. There is a margin of error of 0.2%.

Top ten well matched couples on the USS Enterprise

10/    65.3% - Keenser & Larisa Marcus
09/    67% - Nyota Uhura & Spock
08/    70.4% -  Nyota Uhura & Leonard McCoy
07/    73.8% -  Hikaru Sulu & Pavel Chekov
06/    74% -  Christine Chapel & Amanda Rockeby
05/    75.3% -  Mark Ferris & Lisa Kebs
04/    75.8% -  Leonard McCoy & James T. Kirk
03/    80% -  Nyota Uhura & Montgomery Scott
02/    81% -  Janice Rand & Ashley Linter
01/    99.8% -  James T. Kirk & Spock

Congratulations to our captain and first officer for being the most compatible couple on our ship.

(I removed two results as they appeared to be anomalies. James T. Kirk & James T. Kirk - 87%. Montgomery Scott & USS Enterprise - 75%)

From: Montgomery Scott (Chief Engineer)

Spock blinked dumbly for a few moments, staring at his name next to Jim’s in the number one spot with only 0.2% away from being completely compatible, and allowing for the margin of error, would mean they could possibly be 100%. Spock almost felt sick and he immediately put the PADD down with a loud thunk onto the desk in front of him. He stood up, composed himself, and left his quarters at a fast pace, heading straight for the engineering department.

“Mr Scott,” Spock said, voice sharp and dangerous as he found Scotty sitting back in his chair, a mug of coffee in his hand as he watched one of the computer screens in front of him.

“I thought you’d come here,” Scotty said, taking a loud slurp from his mug before putting it down and leaning over to grab a PADD. “Here yer go, Mr Spock. Full software information including coding and maths used to determine the match ratings. I triple checked all the results, especially considering Jim kept getting such a high rating with himself, but I think you’ll find it’s all correct and accurate.”

Spock looked over all the information, flicking between all the programming code and mathematic equations used to get the findings. He felt his body sink slightly as he checked for a third time and discovered that there was nothing wrong with the program used, and all the equations and results were valid.

“Scotty, what the hell is this?” Spock whirled around to see Jim striding toward them, a PADD clutched tightly in his left hand. Jim stopped when he saw him. “Oh, err, hey Spock.”

“He’s here for the same thing you are,” Scotty said with a smile, looking the picture of relaxed. “Show him the work, Spock.”

Spock looked down at the PADD and handed it over to Jim, who gave him a quick look before fixing his eyes on the programming code.

“I have concluded Mr Scott’s findings are correct.”

Jim’s face became tenser and his frown became deeper as he read what was on the screen, clearly unhappy that he was most compatible with a first officer he loathes. The disappointment was clear in those expressive blue eyes and Spock felt his stomach twist in knots uncomfortably.

“But… we don’t get on,” Jim said, frowning in confusion when he finally looked up from the PADD.

“The software doesn’t lie. And whilst we’re on it, do you mind if I ask Uhura out Spock?” Scotty asked, eyes hopeful.

“I have no claim on Uhura and she is free to date whomever she wishes.”

Scotty rubbed his hands together with a gleeful smile on his face. “Fantastic.”

“I should go to the bridge,” Jim said, still looking extremely baffled.

“I will accompany you if you don’t object.”

“No, it’s fine,” Jim said vaguely, his mind still engaged elsewhere as he slowly started walking away, his face screwed up in thought. Spock quickly fell into step beside him and couldn’t help but continually glance over at Jim, checking to see if he was all right. The protective urge that always reared its head when Jim was around was no longer as unexpected as it used to be. Now he fully accepted that he took an active role in ensuring Jim’s mental well being.

“You are upset?” Spock commented as they neared one of the turbo lifts.

“No, I’m not upset. Just confused. What’s your take on all of this?”

Spock hesitated. “You do not wish to know.”

“I do, I want to know.”

Spock stopped and Jim stood opposite him, blue eyes wide and curious. Spock swallowed and averted his eyes.

“After a careful study of the findings and the complex processes Mr Scott used to reach his conclusions, I am led to believe the most logical course of action would be to engage in a romantic relationship with you to determine if the results hold any validity in practice. I understand you do not find me an obvious choice of partner, and so I will of course respect and understand your decision to dismiss these findings and carry on as if the software was never created.”

Jim’s mouth fell open in shock. “You’re saying that you actually want to date me because… the math adds up?”

“Exactly. I have a profound respect for science and this software is incredibly advanced and so I acknowledge that the findings are most likely accurate.”

Jim looked completely awe-struck, like he couldn’t quite believe what was happening. “You hate me.”

“I do not.”

Jim snorted disbelievingly. “Sure. Then why do you fight with me all the time?”

“Because you constantly do not think things through. I take your safety and well being incredibly seriously and don’t want you to become harmed, which is why I am always insistent on the proper way of doing things, so as to minimise the likelihood of you becoming hurt.”

Jim’s eyes softened and a small smile spread across his face, which filled Spock’s chest with a warm feeling.

“That’s kind of sweet,” Jim said, cocking his head to the side and staring at Spock thoughtfully. “You… like me then?” Jim asked shyly, and Spock was both baffled and aroused by the slightly vulnerable Jim standing in front of him, eyes begging for approval.

“Yes. When you are not being reckless.”

A smirk slid onto Jim’s face, all cocky and confident, the moment of vulnerability completely gone. “That’s how I am.”

“I know, and I constantly attempt to accept that particular characteristic of yours.”

“Well, how about we talk this evening? After shift?”

“That is acceptable,” Spock said with a nod.

“Jim.” Spock looked down the corridor to see Doctor McCoy walking toward them.

“Hey the other half of the 4th most compatible couple on this ship,” Jim said with a wink, giving McCoy a gentle nudge with his shoulder.

McCoy raised an eyebrow, looking at Jim in the same way a weary parent would look at their favourite child.

“I must go to the bridge,” Spock stated.

“See you there,” Jim said with a small wave as Spock got into the lift.

Just before the turbo lift doors shut, Spock saw Jim place his hand on the small of the doctor’s back. The spike of jealousy was a shock, as was the immediate urge to go and spam Doctor McCoy’s message inbox with Scotty’s results, showing off that he was still in first place when it came to compatibility with Jim.

Instead, he calmed himself down and strode out onto the bridge, where most of the crew exchanged incredulous whispers about how he and Jim were somehow the best paired couple on the ship.

He settled at his station, readying himself for a long shift.

“That was unprofessional and disrespectful,” Jim shouted later that evening as he stood in Spock’s quarters, hands balled into fists at his side.

“I was merely stating my opinion about Commodore Nuerick’s decision to reduce their science department on star base 83b. The position of that star base is fairly isolated and so it is necessary to not only have secure and reliable medical equipment, but also an advanced science laboratory that can be used by a starship should the need arise.”

“He was talking on the screen to me, the captain, not you. You had no right to butt in and state your opinion in a matter that does not concern you.”

Spock’s jaw tightened a fraction as Jim took a step closer. “As your first officer, you should listen and respect my opinion on a matter such as that.”

“If I want your opinion, I will ask for it. I look bad if I have my commanding officers being insubordinate right in front of me,” Jim snapped as he got into Spock’s personal space, his eyes hard and confrontational.

Spock’s hands clenched together behind his back. “Please do not talk to me in such a tone.”

Jim’s eyes flashed dangerously, his face inches from Spock’s as they stood silently, tension crackling and bursting around them. Spock was always struck by how good looking Jim was when angry and because Jim was so close to him, he could see all the light flecks in his angry blue eyes and the red flush across his cheeks perfectly. He was a stunning creature, even when exuding an emotion that most considered ugly.

Spock’s eyes flew open wide when he felt Jim’s soft lips make contact with his own. Instead of pushing Jim away, or perhaps standing there confused, he lunged for Jim on pure instinct, pulling his body flush with his own as they kissed angrily and deeply, all their frustration being poured into a desperate kiss.

Spock wrapped a strong, protective arm around Jim’s shoulders as they continued to fight with their mouths. Jim let out a small whimper when Spock nipped gently at his lips before pushing his tongue inside his mouth again.

Jim pulled away, gasping for air, and looked at Spock darkly.

It felt like time stopped as they stared at each other, both trying to gauge the other person’s reaction to the kiss. Spock was completely captivated by Jim’s lips, which were swollen, red and shiny from their kiss. Jim let out a small, soft sigh of defeat before leaning in and kissing Spock again, like there was no other choice.

They fumbled over toward the bed, Spock’s body wound tight with arousal and anticipation as he continued turning his head in different angles to kiss Jim as deeply as he possibly could, craving the taste. Spock let out a surprised yelp, which he was more than a little embarrassed about, when Jim’s hand curled around the bulge in his pants.

“Remind me to give Scotty a raise,” Jim murmured after they fell onto the bed. Spock gave a small noise of confirmation before burying his nose into Jim’s neck and taking a good long sniff, the smell completely intoxicating.

From then on it was a blur of clothes and skin for Spock. He felt spoilt as he looked at the expanse of gorgeous skin open to him to touch and taste. He flicked his tongue over Jim’s pink nipple, causing Jim’s body to shudder for a split second. Spock looked up and met Jim’s beautiful eyes which were heavy lidded and glazed over with lust.

He moved down Jim’s body, his fingers brushing the golden trail down from his belly button into his boxer shorts. Spock didn’t wait for permission to grab and roughly pull the offending underwear off, desperate to get to his prize. Jim moaned long and loud when Spock leant down to nuzzle his balls and lick the hard cock from root to tip.

Spock struggled to rein in the raw lust that was tearing through his body as he licked the head of Jim’s cock slowly. He wanted to last, but the ball of impatient lust in his stomach demanded he do the natural thing and take Jim as soon as possible.

They fumbled around quickly, Spock manhandling Jim’s knees up and out, and then all of a sudden Spock’s world stopped as he slowly slid inside Jim with one slow thrust. He felt like everything suddenly made sense, like he’d just put down the very last puzzle piece in the biggest game in the universe. It was perfect.

He quickly started thrusting, staring down at Jim’s firm chest, his muscular biceps and the beautifully flushed cock lying rigid on his flat stomach, waiting for Spock’s touch.

Spock could barely believe that it was happening as he continued pushing his hips forward, his eyes staring into Jim’s, hoping and begging for Jim to understand that it wouldn’t be a one time thing. That it couldn’t be, not for them. They were always different.

Jim pulled him down for a deep, sloppy kiss and Spock felt sparks explode in front of his eyes as his body shuddered and shook, his climax ripping through him almost violently. He vaguely heard himself gasp and groan as he released deep into Jim, his baser instincts sated for the moment.

Spock rolled off of Jim once the aftershocks had abated and pushed himself up against his side. He wrapped his hand around Jim’s dick, giving it a few tight strokes, and Jim came with a loud, shrill yell. Spock watched, entranced, as Jim came over his own stomach and chest in long, thick stripes.

Spock curled around Jim instinctively and pressed a kiss to the soft, tanned skin of his shoulder.

“Happy Valentine’s Day,” Jim murmured, wiping his stomach with a tissue before moving back into Spock’s possessive grip.

Spock gave a contented hum as he pressed his soft cock against the cleft of Jim’s ass, waves of contentment rippling through his exhausted body. “Perhaps we should suggest Mr Scott send the software to other ships.”

“Definitely. Let people know what they’ve been missing.”

No one was surprised the next week when they saw Jim and Spock holding hands tightly underneath a table as they ate lunch, or that following any arguments during shift, both of them would vacate the bridge for twenty minutes and come back looking rumpled and satisfied.

One evening, when they were curled up together in bed, Spock even admitted that perhaps there was something worthwhile about illogical Terran holidays.

The End
