Character Name: The Handmaid.
Character Series: Homestuck
Character Age: She’s Aradia’s age, that is six sweeps or around 13.

Background:

There isn’t much to say about The Handmaid. She is one of the troll’s Ancestors, but because Time Shenanigans she was on an asteroid that passed through a portal and ended up all the way into the “present” on the trolls’ session, where she was raised by Scratch. Because of the way time works in Homestuck, and that there is never a clear indication on just when the events depicting her happen, I will assume she was raised at the same time the troll kids were, and so by the point she is being taken she and Aradia are of the exact same age. At any rate, The Handmaid was raised in isolation, knowing only Scratch and the Felt and all the green that this involves, which is to say, everything from the colors of her clothes to the skin the group. Scratch, in an odd way, functioned as her lusus, although their relationship was always tainted by the fact he was keeping there against her will with the express purpose to hand her over to his master so she could be used as a tool. Suffice to say, Handmaid didn’t take this very good, so spent all her life fighting Scratch, firstly because she always thought she would be able to escape, and secondly for the sake of bothering him, which is probably the closest she ever knew to fun.

The Handmaid ultimately fails to escape and is given to Lord English (because he was already there and blah blah blah you know the drill, she was fighting a losing war.) She is then cursed to live an exceedingly long amount of time while she works to cause unrest and violence among the trolls, so that they are capable of winning their session of Sgrub and release him eventually; during this time The Handmaid was also knew as The Demoness, and her deeds were terrible enough to gather more fear from her than from English, although he never really showed himself that much to begin with. Once she had accomplished her mission, she was to recruit The Condese, Feferi’s ancestor, so she could be released and finally die. This has been told to her over and over again. The Handmaid is taken from the very moment she tries to escape and is found by English, so she hasn’t done anything yet (although because of her time travelling abilities she has already done so anyway this is too complicated).

Personality:

The Handmaid, taken from a time before her deeds as the Demoness, it’s a bratty, outspoken and stubborn troll girl. She has a serious dislike over authority (represented by Scratch) and follows nobody’s orders but her own, mainly because she doesn’t know better, but a lifetime of being harassed by the cueball head has made her highly susceptible to people telling her what to do and how to do it; she doesn’t take that very well, and by that I mean she will most likely take it as an offense to her liberty, and perhaps as an attempt to restrain her again, which might very well not be the case, but she will nonetheless treat it as such. Earning her confidence and belief that she is not being simply used as a tool will prove to be a difficult task, as she doesn’t really want to associate with anybody if it involves trusting them.

On the same line, she strongly believes that everyone probably hates her before hand, considering the things she has done -or will do if taken from her point of view-; of course, she hasn’t taken into consideration the non-troll population, but will quickly consider that “if they were to find out” they would hate her the same way. This by no means implies that the trolls already hate her, and most will likely react differently towards her, but her self-appreciation on this matter has been hit so many times by Scratch conditioning her that she will refuse to give herself a break and even attempt to reassert her believes by being particularly bitchy towards people. This doesn’t mean she has a low self-esteem per se, as she has a pretty strong personality, but it goes more along the lines of having already decided she has no say in the matter of her actions to be, and that all the fear and destruction she will cause -and has caused- warrants a negative treatment from others, which saddens her, sure, but which she takes in stride and as something she must accept as a part of herself.

Handmaid has a really, really strange relationship with Scratch. Perhaps it would have been in the black quadrants if she had been older, or if she had been introduced to the very concept of them, bur seeing as how she’s unaware of the usual troll proceedings, it’s more accurate to estimate that in her own particular way, Handmaid and Scratch got along in their own sick way that was expressed the best through violence and escape attempts. While she can’t honestly bring herself to love him as a parental figure, he is the only one that fits the description, horrible as it might be, and therefore she unconsciously puts him in such position, being the interactions with him what she knows the best. She would probably be completely taken aback by the way human parents treat their children, droned or not, because in her case it was flooded by negative feelings. She’s also probably the only troll that would give a heartily “what the fuck” at the description of redrom and blackdrom, although she would be just as lost by the human definition of love. This all will be certainly a learning experience for her.

Because of her isolation, The Handmaid is pretty much sheltered in many things, specially the usual social procedures that don’t include trying to stab someone in the head. While she is a very typical teenager, she’s alien (bad pun here, I know) to friendly banter, gathering with friends, going to school (and the concept of listening to adults as a whole), sharing her things, having to buy and/or pay for things, and most likely wearing clothes that aren’t green (something she will be incredibly grateful for and will most likely also make her the only not droned kid on Mayfield that loves her new clothes). She also has zero interactions with other trolls, leave alone humans, and finding herself human as well will confuse her to no end. Also important to mention is that considering she has no troll culture naturally taught to her she tends to skips some speech patterns, such as giving elaborate names to certain body parts; she might indulge in this from time to time after being exposed to them, but her speech pattern is way, way more direct, and she doesn’t go around phrases to either insult or describe things and situations.

Abilities:

As Aradia’s Ancestor, The Handmaid possesses all of her time related abilities (they are even shown and used specifically for English’s plans). She’s capable of travelling across time and stopping time, be it on the general area/everywhere or on a specific object/person.

As shown, The Handmaid’s weapon of choice seems to be needles such as Rose’s, although they surely have another name. They even seem to be Echidna’s Quills, the strongest wands ever made, which she will be able to regain later on.
