btw, i'm concerned too. they usually do put down injured dogs. if you can get him back out, there are TONS of rescues that will gladly foster him, especially if you help them out a little financially with a small donation. it doesn't sound like he's irreparably fucked health-wise.

which I'd be glad to do. no call back from animal control yet, I'm going down there wednesday in person if I don't hear back. I'm really kicking my own ass for not thinking to go to the humane society first

"I can't get the link to work to read the whole story, but he should definitely contact the animal control officer of that town. This is important in case it was a lost or stollen pet and often they will pay for veterinary care. If your friend wishes to keep the dog he can let the ACO know that if nobody claims it they wish to adopt it. If the dog is injured the ACO may consider criminal investigation into what happen which may protect other dogs from abuse...
