Several frantic phone calls from various family members telling him the impossible, John had driven non-stop to get back home, with only breaks to refuel and grab another coffee. The nice thing about this situation was that John didn't need to announce his presence. Mary could sense him as soon as he'd arrived at the house, and that was why, as soon as she knew he was there, she went downstairs and watched him quietly, taking in the sight of him.

John became aware someone was watching him; he tensed for a second, then relaxed, opening his eyes. She was just as beautiful as he remembered. "Mary," he said, voice rougher than usual.
