I feel like I'm living my life like one of Tom's RPG characters, building myself up, collecting all the neccessary items and skills to be up to the task of the final battle.

Interesting analogy... Question standing... Is it or is it not a wise approach? Being that I have no idea what my final battle is to resemble, I have no shot at preparing similarly.

hurry up and lvl to 60 then we can duo the final boss, saving the world from its distinction, and still make it back before mom makes us clean up our rooms. Teenage heros are the best.
