The type of room you're putting it in The specific wall space (or entertainment center space, if you already have one you plan to keep) where it will go The number of people who will be watching it most often and where they will be watching it from (the varying viewing angles can make a huge difference in what will make the most sense for everyone watching) Your budget Your minimum requirements for sound and picture quality The quality of DVD player you have (and whether you have plans to upgrade it should the player be a little older) Blah blah blah
There are a lot of factors. I found CNET's guides very useful last year when I ultimately picked my TV, which is a 37 inch Toshiba, and which is been exactly what I expected.
I just saw that Circuit City is closing a bunch of stores. We did very well last year getting a new TV from CompUSA under clearance and saved about $200. If they have a TV you like on closeout, keep it in mind.
We did the research with the product guides and decided we needed a 36" or 37", and we did final research at Fry's and Best Buy and CompUSA to see which one we liked best. We settled on a Samsung and have been happy with it for what we do (DVDs/Apple TV).
