Trigger warning: fat hate, depression; feelings might change once this sadness is over

So Zachary Quinto apparently said something dumb about fat people. I wasn't even able to read what he said.

Is this gonna be a thing now? Are celebrities just going to come out of the woodwork and say assy things about fat people? Do I have to tolerate it from ( Read more... )

For what it's worth, I've always kind of felt that hating (or loving) people I stand absolutely no chance of ever meeting is a waste of time and energy. Yes, Takei, Quinto, Fry, and so many others have said things that are hurtful, ridiculous, and offensive. There's no excusing that, and these three in particular really should have known better. But even as these remarks do hurt (and they're aimed at people like me, too; I'm about five feet, seven inches tall and I weigh somewhere in the neighbourhood of 250 pounds, though in my case, there's a fair amount of muscle lurking under the fat), it's important to remember that celebrities hear just as many hate-your-body messages as the rest of us do, and those who are involved in music or acting in films or on TV are especially under a lot of pressure to look "perfect," where "perfect" equals "thin." It doesn't excuse what they say, of course, but because not a lot of them will have thought seriously about the issue of discrimination against fat people, perhaps it's not entirely ( ... )

I think forgiveness is always the right choice over hating, because the only person who is negatively affected by your hate is you. I don't think anyone deserves that power over you ( ... )

Also, celebrities talk out of their asses just as much as the rest of us do and they're in the public eye when they do it, so I wouldn't assume I know someone's entire feelings about anything, based on some stupid thing they said during an interview once.
