Did you finish it? I know he tends to go on lengthy tangents (there's this seal right? and oh, that reminds me of this, and also this and this and don't forget this, and now back to that seal we were talking about ten chapters ago) but I think he's passionate and it comes out in the book. Plus, all the anecdotes about amateur and professional archaeology are awesome.
I think I got stuck the part where he was saying that (forgive me I can't word it very well) evolution does not always follow rules with the example being mobile sea animals won't always develop flippers and become streamlined, etc, and was citing a prehistoric creature that didn't fit the mold. And I was kind of like, isn't it the exception that proves the rule? I mean, it's extinct and sharks are still around? And then I got distracted and it came due (had checked it out at the library), but I will try to get back to it! His passion definitely comes across; I'll always give someone who's trying to share something they love a shot.
