More Live Radio Blather: WNYC/Soundcheck

Dec 05, 2008 11:08

This afternoon, I have been invited back on WNYC radio's Soundcheck with John Schaefer to discuss 2008's top singles and albums. Year-end segments are always fun, and I'm looking forward to a wide-ranging discussion ( Read more... )

so, you're a columnist for "Idotolator"?

Yeah, plus she got my name wrong, but at least she fixed "Idolator" on second and subsequent references. I actually felt a little bad for her - it's clear that subbing for a regular like Schaefer is a tough job. And she was really nice, so I couldn't be too annoyed.

yay, bruce!!

Is she pronouncing your name right? i always thought the "lan" in your name rhymed with "pan" not "con"

You are correct: muh-LAN [like "can"]-fee.

That's the second time it happened! Schaefer did the same thing when I did the first segment back in August, and several friends had a laugh about it.

When I came in for the second one in September, I got there nice and early, and we had a friendly chat in which I told him how to say it, and he was great.

But the substitute today didn't know that, of course. And it's partially my fault, because I had subway trouble and showed up too late for much friendly chitchat. I was thinking before the show that I'd better do my whole, "Let me tell you how that funny name of mine is pronounced" spiel, but I never got to it.

Ah well.

yeah, on to more important things. Where is joe satriani's "If I Could Fly" going to land on next week's Hot 100 chart? I imagine i'm not the only person to buy that song on iTunes out of curiosity today.

I also noticed the pronunciation gaffes, but still that was a nice segment. You were on for almost 20 minutes!

I was surprised you didn't mention Steven Colbert's successful play to temporarily knock Kanye down in the iTunes charts.

This is why I can't fall behind on my TiVo-watching.

That was hilarious. I'm surprised he didn't make fun of the new No. 1 iTunes album, which I think was Britney's Circus. He could've declared war on her, too.

It's most fun when people hear it live on the radio. I dunno, there's something about that that's sort of immediate. When I was on in September, bradamant said she was surprised how different she felt about hearing my voice come out of the radio (like, "Weird, that's Chris!") rather than listening to a streamed recording later.

This happened to me when I was in France and listening to Brian Lehrer and suddenly my cousin was on! It was totally surreal.

Also, I really liked the segment. You have a really nice radio manner -- you sound like yourself AND are articulate (not that you aren't normally, but sometimes people get all muddled on the radio).

Thanks for the compliment. Articulate is good - I sometimes worry in these things that I'm just spewing/rambling.

When the segment was over, the host and the booker both thanked me and said stuff like, "Wow! We were saying in the booth, 'He just keeps going!'" Is that code for, Damn, you are a serious geek? Dunno. Guess I'll declare victory.
