VI: The Lovers

So, recently, I've been getting more and more involved in reading the tarot. It's something I've always been drawn to and wanted to do. Since living with Emma, we've done a good amount of reading and familiarizing ourselves with cards and meanings, primarily with Emma's Rider-Waite deck. But... it's too full of feminine energy for me (even if it * ( Read more... )

That sounds exciting! I've always wanted a tarot deck but nothing's grabbed me at the moment. I've wanted to make my own but I'm not sure how long that would take, or if I'd even be happy with it.
I look forward to your daily readings! You aren't on LJ enough. :pout: (Not like I make myself accessible...)

Oooh. Making a Tarot deck sounds like it would be amazing, if not quite the project. ^_^ Maybe you should give it a shot. Personally, I want to make my own Norse Rune set from total scratch. Like from picking the wood off an apple tree to blessing it with my own blood. *shrug* Lots more steps to that, but it's not nearly as artistic as tarot.

Runes set are cool as well! ^_^ I read about one woman on line who stains/blesses her runes with her own menstrual blood, though... during that time of the month. I suppose it makes it personal, but that's still a bit too much for me. o_O

Haha. That's actually the best way to seal the runes with your own blood. Unfortunately for me, I would have to cut myself multiple times to produce enough. Oh women and your bloody connection to spirituality.

I just can't imagine the position you would have to be in. It's like a weird version of the Japanese squatter toilets.

It's funny you should mention tarot. Earlier today I finished reading a book in which the main character does tarot readings, and her grandmother does one for another character. And as I'm reading it I thought hmm... yes it's a novel but it's true to the character, and also, I want to maybe pick up tarot cards. The last time I had mine read was in high school by a friend who was learning, but it was scarily accurate. I'd like to give it a try I think.

Hahaha. That's something that I've discovered actually: tarot cards can be scarily accurate. That's why I want to get to know my deck and it's cards, so I can give accurate readings to folks. It's a way huge connection between deck, reader, and querent. Super exciting. I'm really excited to be exploring a more spiritual pursuit. You should look into it and do some research!

I always like to tell this story: one night I had my high school friends over, and since I see them so infrequently I'll give them a tarot reading whenever I see them. The next day we went to a Ren Faire where she had her cards read, this time by a professional reader who charged $20. Eight of the ten cards from the night before showed back up (albeit in a new spread of 14). Creepy? Y/N

Rider-Waite is a fantastic deck for starting out on, and then once you have the general meanings you can move on to decks with more nuances messages. I'm in love with my watercolor, Arthurian deck: Legend.

Two books I would recommond for anyone interested in tarot are Tarot for Yourself by Mary K. Greer and 78 Degrees of Wisdom by Rachel Pollack. The first is almost entirely exercises for familiarizing yourself with the cards and integrating them into other parts of your life (whether that be ritual, spells, or whathaveyou) while the second is focused entirely on meaning, devoting ten pages to each major arcana and the longest descriptions of the minor arcana I've seen.
