Since it seems you, like me, take Snape's innocence more or less as a "given," let me know what you think about this (albeit waaaay out there) theory -- yes, I know there's not a lot of support in canon, but here goes :
Assuming Snape is innocent and RAB is Regulus Black -
Sirius said that Regulus was killed by one of Voldemort's henchmen, and that he wouldn't be important enough for Voldemort to kill himself. JK repeated this in an interview recently.. so I think it might be important. What if the henchman that went after Regulus was Snape? Okay, to take it further, it was seemed that to get to the locket, two people were needed. I don't think DD could have done it on his own. Regulus was only 15 when he was killed, right? So he would have been an underage wizard too. What if Snape went with him to ge the locket? I know this is a huge stretch, since DD would have known about it, and that causes problems. Let me know what you think!
I think that's a really good idea. Doesn't make sense, why would Snape leave the locket at Grimmauld Place? Surely he'd have taken the locket to Dumbledore.
Maybe it was Lucius Malfoy, but he just didn't know what the locket was, kind of like he didn't realise the diary was a horcrux. *brain ticks slowly*
Hmm, you're definitely right about taking the locket to DD. There had to be 2 wizards to get the locket... I just can't imagine who the second would be. I feel like at this point, Regulus is against Voldemort and Lucius would probably just kill him instead of helping him. Maybe a different member of the order
