Depo is different for everybody. A good deal of people stop having their periods altogether, but for others, it may make them irregular or spot a lot. I'm not sure how many shots you should go through before deciding for sure that it's not right for you, but your doctor probably knows what he is talking about. If it's not normal on your second shot, then it's totally cool to discontinue. There are other methods of birth control that might work better for you. I'd just talk it out with him.
If you've never been on birth control before, Depo can be pretty rough and scary. I had to overcome a needle phobia before I was able to get the shot, so I can empathize with your fear

if you are worried about weight and being discreet - get the ring
I was on for depo for years. I was tired, lost hair, gained alot of weight, looking back it was more a hassle than what its worth. I wouldnt do it today. Some women though it works wonderfully and they have no real issues.
Give it one more short. see how your body reacts. if it still makes you uncomfortable then go with the ring. Everyone reacts differently to this so maybe it is just taking your body a little bit to adjust.
When I first went on depo... it took the 3rd shot for my spotting to stop. But everyone is different. Everyone on depo that I know has their period stop eventually.
I don't know what it's called, but another form of birth control that doesn't have the weight gain...and you don't lose calcium is a little plastic thing that is injected in your arm and stays there for 3 years or is it 5 years?. Anyways it also stops your period.
