Now that I calmed down, do tell me what exactly is so bad about this City? Is it these "curses" the information text you showed me mentioned? I'm also not sure what I should make of the paragraph about vampire killing. There are... vampires around here? And people who go after them with stakes? Maybe this City is not so different to home after all.

Yes, it's mostly the curses that make it pretty bad.

There are vampires, though I haven't had personal contact with them or people who hunt them.

Ah, but there is something else on my mind: If the City collects random people, could it happen that I may encounter someone I know or does it prevent that?

That may very well happen! It does bring in people from the same worlds more or less frequently.
