Japan Day 1

So I arrived in Japan today after a pretty crazy trip. My first flight got delayed so I missed my flight to Japan. As a result, they rerouted me through Detroit and I had to run through the airport to catch my flight. This triggered an asthma attack but at least there was absolutely no reason for me to to not just go to sleep when the exhaustion ( Read more... )

Wow, I hadn't thought about the smoking issue, since so many places have banned it here in the US and you don't run into the problems with allergies like before. The hotel room we had in Indiana on my wedding night turned out to be a "smoking" room. The hotel was full and they wouldn't change us, so we hung out with friends in their room for a while then sat around in the lobby until dawn. (Yes, we got a refund on the room. I had been very specific about my allergy.) It was only one night, as we left for our honeymoon in Natural Bridge State Park, Kentucky.

How long will you be in Japan this time?

I'll be here for six months doing my dissertation research.

That sucks about having to sit in the lobby but at least you got a refund. The guy helping me find an apartment here was like, "Do you really need a smoke free apartment? What if they just clean it?" I had to point out that even a 'cleaned' smoking room or living in a building full of smokers, can kill me. He got back to me yesterday that he found a local center who offers one room apartments for students and researchers and the whole building is smoke free. I'll see it on Tuesday and see if that's actually true...

I have a lot of trouble here in Japan to be honest since people often smoke while eating or smoke while drinking. I expect I'm going to have to spend a lot of time apologizing for my deadly illness. It's such a pain considering I barely even notice my asthma in the US since I only get triggered by smoke, pollution and extremely cold weather, all of which are easily avoidable in the US.
