and we were talking and he got his breathing mask off and he is doing a lot better. It made me so happy to see him smile. First thing he did, though, again, was warn me that I'd better not cry because his laureltabs will make him cry at anything, much less seeing me cry again

I understand what this person is trying to say about asking if you were happy. You should (& are) happy he's alive, but it's a sad & scary thing that happened to begin with.

The thing is, a lot of people break up, & handle it in different ways. There has to be a reason behind it. I think that if he did this because of his break up, he really needs to seek help or therapy for it. Something like that isn't normal. I do wish for him to make a great, full recovery.

I'm happy but it pissed me off a little I guess. I've been incredibly touchy lately.

I know, and I've been trying to get him help for this for years. I'm sure they'll be putting him in the ward after his recovery.

So he's been this dangerous towards himself for years? :/ It's bad enough for a ward & not just therapy?

Yeah, he's been "clinically" depressed and legitimately suicidal for a really long time. Yeah, after trying to commit suicide via car, you have to be in the ward + therapy for a minimum of 72 hours
