Painting The Town Red

In our last exciting episode you may recall that I was asked to come up with a variation of "my" paint scheme to fit an SD90MAC.  The first one rolled out of the paint shop of the rebuilder's shop in Kentucky this week, and I went down to have a look at it...

You may recall that I was not keen on the idea of putting the logo on the nose.  I felt the ( Read more... )

Interesting paint scheme, but that logo is just *so* 80s...

Because it is. 1986, to be precise.

There were talks that the company logo and letterhead might be updated, but that was quickly shot down. It could be changed, but then it would become "so 20-oughts".

Oooh, that's a pretty train indeed. :) I rather like the finished work.. The 'V' carrying further over onto the sides before it hits the white 'racing stripe' looks quite dynamic.

Agreed the logo is a bit in clutterspace, but, you pulled it off well!

What did your side drawing look like? In all, it looks good, the melding didn't end up looking like a committee did it.

A lot of people both inside and outside the company suggested doing something similar to Conrail's SD80MACs, and as much as I liked them I still didn't think anything with a logo on the front of the nose would work (I wanted to place in the tapered area on both sides of the nose). So when I was encouraged to do one with the nose logo anyway, I looked back to those Conrail units. I turned the bow-wave in the front into a V to both get under the headlight and to try to keep some resemblance with the chevrons on the spartan-cab units, then the wide white band continued across the cab side as on the Conrails with the numbers in red.

The side drawing I wanted is what was chosen (shown above), from the cabside on back. What the PR guy did was blend that with the nose-logo front that he wanted. It works well, I think.

Yep, 4300hp.

Word going around is that the new CMO wants all engines washed once a month, rather than the past practice of doing so every six months at best, except for special occassions. It remains to be seen whether or not he can made that happen. Our SD60s don't look like they been shown a soap bubble since we got them two years ago.
