[Derek's out and about today; the house is too stifling, and besides, he wants to get a good, unobtrusive look of whatever new feathers he can find without them realizing he's, well, stalking them to get info on them. So he'll spend a fair amount of time today simply making his way around the village, occasionally stopping to watch this or that,

[And of course he has his giant crucifix with him; he feels too weird and naked without it. After all, Luceti's allegedly dangerous... He really doesn't want to get too comfortable when the first problem arises. Lord knows he's suddenly already too at peace compared to home.]

What gets him to actually look up and take notice is that crucifix on his back. Not exactly hard to miss, after all. And not exactly usual, either. And this is coming from someone who knows guys that attach actual lit neon crosses to their work shirts sometimes.
As the guy gets closer, Derek nods at him.]

Enjoying the scenery? I gotta' admit, it's pretty amazing to me, at least.

Something like. New in town, I take it?

Pretty new, yeah-just got here about a week ago; you've been here a while, then? I've met people who've been here for weeks, even years.

...what's with the cross?

[But he offers a glance and a smile to the man.]
I'm not much good at being a priest, though. The least I could do is a carry a cross with a whole lot of mercy in it: the world where I'm from happens to lack a lot of that.

... Hn, I'm afraid that's been dead and gone for a while, where I'm from.
But vampires... I didn't think there's such a thing, outside of fables or scary books-none I've heard of, yet. Though I can suddenly understand why priests would be so helpful.
[He feels he should be more shocked at things like this, but... he's seen some strange characters, both back home and here in Luceti. He can't really be that surprised to hear someone actually has to fight vampires.]

...So Earth's gone where you're from, huh?

Yeah, before I was born. We sort of crash landed on a desert planet; we try and make the most of it-well, the good folks try-but there's not a whole lot people can look forward to. No water above ground, no rain, no plants or flowers or the average animal or bug like here...
Not to mention, the heat sure is something to get used to.
