Friday night we went to the team penning in Port Allen. I had never seen this before. A three-person horse team goes up to a little herd of calves which have numbers on them. The judge calls out a number and that calf has to be cut out fist and then in number orser until all 10 are cut or the wrong one runs out. It looked like great fun!
There were all kinds of horses at all stages of proficiency in this skill. E was particularly fascinated by one little girl about her age. E kept getting closer and closer to the fence and would have climbed into the pen to get a better look if she thought she could get away with it.
E and I had followed Pedro and Lexie over there. Lexie had to go to work, so we left about 9:30. I didn't want to leave, but when I got home I was glad because I crashed big time.
Saturday morning Lexie showed up about 8:30, raring to go to the Cutting Horse competition in Gonzales. I got her to take me around to get some wooden pallets I had seen in a dumpster because I need them to stack hay on. A nice man there helped us load them in Lexie's pickup. We finally met up with Pedro and Jeanine in Port Vincent and went over to the Cutting Horse thing at Lamar-Dixon. E was again fascinated and at one point was donw in the practice arean sitting on the fence when I looked for her. For the cutting horse competition one rider picks out a calf from the herd and holds it away from the herd until it turns away from him. then he can let it go and pick another calf. He gets graded on a point system. The prize was $10,000. Someone asked Pedro to ride one of his young horses, but Pedro turned it down. We all wanted to see him ride, but he said he didn't want to look bad since it was an unfamilier horse. I ran into J.O., from college, Zeta and AGR days and we caught up on all her many sisters who were in Zeta and her brother whom I briefly dated. She's a lawyer, now, too! Works for the 4th circuit out of NO. Her hubby and SIL had horses in the competition.
If I wasn't about to collapse after coming back from that, we went out to Southpark to watch the little local show which had poles and barrels still in progress when we got there. Pedro introduced me to a bunch of people, plus E's school bus driver was there and had a bunch of horses and kids and nieces in the deal. I've been living in this town 5 years and I finally feel like I have some frinds here. It takes getting out there, I know, but it also helps to have someone to introduce you around.
Went and got my horse trailer from Pedro's and brought it to my house. I'm pulling it out to Red Oak today because after our lesson we are bringing Red and Cim back to ride at the Park arena. Gotta go -- its going to be a big day!!!!
