I wonder if American writing has always contained examples of this kind of thinking, as a result of the myths of entrepreneurship and upward social mobility.

A woman (fitting the stereotypical middle-aged Oprah demographic) came into the store and asked if we sold batteries. I told her no. She looked at me and said, "Really, you don't have any batteries?" as if we in fact did sell batteries but I was keeping it a secret from her. I said, "We really don't have batteries." This seemed to convince her, but she went on, "I'm reading The Secret and it tells me I should buy a battery because it's working."

I don't want to know the Secret, but I do want to know how a battery fits into the reward system of said Secret.
