Babylon Five

Jan 07, 2010 22:20

Recently discovered that you can get most of babylon five on Hulu, and that the rest can come through Netflix on DVD.
I've never watched it before, but I think I'm going to start.
Thing is, I remember being warned about not watching part of it.
But I can't remember: was it to avoid the first season, the last season, or both?
Can anyone tell me?

The first season is a little rocky, but the second through fourth are fantastic. Then the first half of season 5 is just awful. I'm told that the second half of 5 is a mix of awful and brilliant, but I've never actually made it that far.

Last season is awful, primarily because Season 4 ends with all the plot lines tied up well (and is thus a good place to end anyway).

First season is rocky, but watchable, with stellar home stretch.

Much of the acting and effects have NOT aged well, with the result of us fans not being as proud of it as we were in 1995.

hmm... Given how long itll take me to get to season five anyway, I'll probably take the advice of the first two and stop there.

I don't mind too much about the bad special effects. They have a sort of quaintness to them. For similar reasons I'm not sure whether I prefer watching the original Star Wars trilogy or the digitally remastered versions that came out right before Episode 1 (not to mention Greedo shooting first, but that's a tangent).

Okay fine, what I really mean is that the acting from human characters is, in retrospect, really bad.

Ah.
I didn't realize you were emphasizing the acting.
Only watched a few episodes so far, but I see what you mean.
Theres a certain campiness to the acting that doesn't really exist on TV anymore and looks stilted. Sci-fi shows like B5 (from what I see so far) and Stargate were some of the last vestiges of the campiness that used to pervade more of TV, and ten years ago I'd just accept that kind of acting as running with the territory. BSG ended that.

Or are you thinking of something else?
