One more thing comes to mind-

think about the albums you've listened to over and over, the one that never leaves your CD player for a full month, because you can listen to it THAT much. What was it? Was it just good songs? Was there that one track that you only bought the whole album for, or did you get tired of the hit and want to hear more?

This is what went through my mind in both of my albums.

I don't dare compare myself to such artistry, but I look to those as an example of what to do. Each time, I come back to the fact that there was always "more".

As an artist I believe you have to vary things from time to time, but I also believe that certain aspects need to be rooted firmly. Design something that is sonically yours and expand on it. Branch off in new directions but leave some trace of the original foundation so people have something they recognize and can associate with your sound.

Variety is good, but so is consistency, and being consistent is not the same as being redundant redundant.

I think variety is good.

But the real trick is: your audience's ability to recognise your work regardless of how different they might be. (ie. NIN "March of the Pigs" v. "Hurt" or every Faith No More song ... ever)
