I might get mauled by feminists for saying this, but in one sense, isn't much of this "traditional" arrangement essentially genetically hard-wired into us? In primitive human societies this would have been the norm (big strong man protect woman so she can bear/take care of children who will carry on genes and continue the species, blahblahblah), and we've hardly evolved enough to ditch all of the instincts that no longer serve us in the constructs of our modern society.
It all comes down to vulnerability. Women are smaller and sexually vulnerable to attack, while men tend to be larger and are less likely to be the target of a sex attack.
