I cried yesterday because I had to explain to Adrian why the Avatar issue bothered me. Whenever there is a dispute about race, people come in and start talking about circumstance, business, and other problems in the world none of which address the core issue. I will try to explain my core issue as simply as possible ( Read more... )

Assuming that the assumptions above are true for the sake of argument, my question is: how is "business" the conclusion? How is it not the beginning of the discussion ( ... )

Man, that sucks :( Think you got through to Adrian eventually? I've been kind of disappointed in some of my flist too lately--for instance, at least a couple who seemed really good about diversity issues think Rathbone!Sokka dismissing fans' concerns by saying he'd just get a tan is worthy of praise because "at least he's trying" -_- But then I'm not going out with my flist, so that's not nearly as hard ( ... )

Adrian understands the core issue I presented here. He cannot deny that it is an issue. The problem the two of us were having was more a matter of communication. I was upset and he was just trying to make me happy. Imagine trying to convince someone that the smoking building they were in was actually not on fire and see what happens.

The diversity diversion is disturbing. It's like they took a recipe for mochi and then made apple pie with some exotic cinnamon.

I don't think I'd make any good addition to a video presentation. Plus I'd rather not cry anymore on this subject.

Ahhh, one of those things where you just gotta let someone feel down because really the only conciliatory things you could possibly say are just as bad? Eengh.

IT SERIOUSLY IS. It's like.. man, I wonder if they somehow managed to get the rights from Neil Gaiman to do Anansi Boys, selectively picked out the main characters to be white instead, and went, "No no, we're making it MORE diverse! And see--some of the extras/ancillaries are Asian now!" if everyone would just accept that.

If you'd rather not, that's cool. I was just going to read off the statement prepared by racebending myself, unless I came up with something else on the spot. (My friend ryuutchi did a really great one here though, if you're interested in taking a look.)
