History: Rion couldn't tell you much of anything about who his real parents were, because he doesn't know. The first memories of life he had were with his adopted mother, Katherine, who has steadfastly declined to tell him anything about his biological family. Based on things she's said to other people, though, his biological family is still alive - he isn't with them because they were completely unfit to be parents. It's possible that something that happened to him while he was with his natural parents explains his muteness; as near as any doctors have been able to tell, everything in his throat works physically, and yet he's never been able to talk.

Regardless of his parentage, though, Rion was brought up by a doting single mother who spent much of her life focused on her only son. Katherine was a strong woman who'd spent much of her adult life working as a nurse in Balamb (after all, tourists do need medical attention too) - a kind and caring woman who put as much into her job as she did raising her son. The combination of his mother's twin focuses has been a huge influence on Rion's life growing up; due to her focus on both work and family, this left little time for social interaction outside of what was required for her young son, or social interaction with co-workers occasionally. She did her best to work around Rion's disability - working with him from a young age to read and write and teaching him sign language (while learning it herself) so that they'd have some way to interact. Despite her access to doctors and nurses, being a nurse herself, she wasn't able to find any reason why her only son couldn't say a word.

Rion didn't start out as a SeeD cadet at a young age. He spent much of his life - up until a few years ago, really - in "normal" schooling. While he excelled in academics and was a diligent student, it was clear that his muteness was imparing his ability to have social relationships with others, especially in group situations. Rion was already a shy young boy as it was, and being unable to say anything made it very difficult for him to reach out to others. And when you're a young kid, well -- a lot of kids are impatient and in need of instant gratification. This wasn't to say that he had no friends at all, because he was on decent terms with other people; it's just that he didn't really have anyone you'd call a real friend. Rion didn't have anyone he was especially close to, anyone who he could talk to about serious things, anyone who he hung out with all the time. He spent much of his time when not at school at home, with his mother, who was one of the few people he could "talk" to easily, without the need to pause to write things down, without the trying to figure out what to say.

It was during one of these conversations, when he was 14, that he'd told her that he wanted to leave, to be a SeeD. He explained that he'd seen what she'd done just people who'd come to Balamb, and he wanted to do the same thing - but for all sorts of people, not just the sorts of people who came to Balamb to be tourists. He didn't tell her that it was also because he felt out of place at school, and thought that maybe somewhere else would give him a chance to start over, to be ... a new person. And even though it hurt her to say so, she agreed to let him go for an interview, to try and follow his heart - and, in some indirect way, in her footsteps, since he'd made it clear he wanted to help people, not hurt them.

In his interview (done with an electronic whiteboard and a lot of patience on the part of the Headmaster), Rion explained just what he wanted to do within the elite mercenary group. There were parts about him that didn't seem like they would make him appropriate to be a SeeD cadet - he was shy, he was awkward, he wasn't exactly self-confident, and he was TINY, reaching the astounding height of 5'0". However, beneath those things was an obvious drive to help people, and determination to do so even if he didn't think he could DO that much, because even something was better than nothing. It was also clear from his test results that Rion's opinion of himself was a lot lower than what his capabilities actually were.

Since then, while he hasn't been the most ... socially adept of cadets, it's difficult to argue that he hasn't thrown himself into his studies, finding something that has challenged him more than the rote memorization and fact-regurgitation of conventional schooling. He's still inept at physical activities and hesitates to use offensive para-magic on things, but his talent at getting the most out of his Guardian Forces and his adeptness at healing para-magic has made up for that to this point.

Abilities & Physical Abnormalities: Rion is a wee tiny babby at 5'1" and all of 105 pounds. There are 12 year olds more physically imposing than he is. He's completely and utterly terrible at physical combat, due to being rather clumsy and being... you know, tiny.

Rion is also not exactly skilled with offensive para-magic. He seems to have trouble, really, with any sort of aggressive abilities that come from him directly. However, this inability does not extend to healing and support para-magic, which he's quite adept at - or, oddly enough, attacks stemming directly from Guardian Forces, which he also seems to get more out of than the average cadet. It's more that -- subconsciously, he has issues with DIRECTLY causing damage to things, hence his weakness with offensive para-magic and his ineptitude at combat; however, since healing and support don't cause damage, and since GFs aren't actually HIM causing the damage directly, he's fine with this, and quite capable with those abilities.

Personality: Rion is an interesting mix of mature and immature. He feels far more comfortable around adults (like his mother) than people his age, and downright latches onto people who come across as nurturing or caring like a motherly sort. At the same time, he feels sort of awkward around people his own age - something that's stemmed from his days in conventional schooling, where he had a tremendous amount of difficulty making friends. He's not really well socially developed, especially in the ways of dealing with girls - he's never had a girlfriend and is just incredibly flaily about the idea, not having much in the way of a sex drive or hormones.

Being unable to talk has affected Rion's social interactions in more ways than just his shyness, though. He's very expressive with body language and facial expressions; it's really hard, outside of being just completely stupid about reading people or Rion actively trying to hide how he's feeling, to understand how he feels about something. He's also very, very good at picking up on other people's body language and listening to people, catching inflections in their tone or things that other people might not.

Rion thinks very poorly of his own abilities and is a bit shit in the self-esteem department; he's more likely to just take being bullied and take being made fun of rather than fight it. However, the same doesn't apply to those who he really does consider a friend; he's decked people who have made fun of his mother before, and will fight on behalf of his friends even if he won't do the same thing on his own behalf. Rion cares far more about other people and their well-being than his own, to put it another way - he'd much rather be hurt to make sure a friend's okay than the other way around, and he'd be incredibly guilty if somebody put themselves in danger on his behalf.

Rion is very much musically inclined; outside of his studies, it's one of the things that he focused the most on, and he loves "talking" about it and loves playing music. He's a skilled guitarist and given the chance to bring his guitar somewhere, he will bring it and play something, and there's nothing he'd love more than being invited somewhere to play. While he thinks poorly of most of his skills, guitar is one of the few things he considers himself good at, and one of the few things that he feels like he can connect with other people with.

Some of Rion's abilities are affected by his personality. Rion is basically a gentle, quiet boy who's emotional and empathetic and really does care about other people, more so than he does himself. He doesn't really want to hurt people or fight, and sees it ... more as something he has to do in order to help people through SeeD. He can't fight well, he can't cast offensive magic well, he can't do much of anything that hurts other people himself well. He can, however, use his GFs to great effect, and is a fantastic caster of support and healing para-magic.
