CHARACTER NAME: Hong Meiling
FANDOM: Touhou Project
CANON: After her fight with the Unnamed Gigantic Catfish in Touhou 12.3 - Touhou Hisoutenku
WHAT THEY LOST: Her daily nap. She performs some meditation once a day consisting of a tai chi ritual followed by a nap around noon as she's on the job. This would force her to focus on her work more. If she attempts to nod off at all, a ghost or something will come by and wake her in some manner, such as with a gonging sound.

WHAT THEY LOST: The knowledge of who Remilia and Flandre Scarlet are. With Remilia being her boss/mistress, she provided for her, gave her work, and helped her obtain things like food that wasn't human flesh to eat for her meals. She was her employer and the one who ordered Flandre Scarlet be more guarded due to her inability to control her powers. Flandre, being the dangerous being she was, needed her extra protection and services as well. Both gave her work more purpose.

As far as Meiling knows, Scarlet Devil Mansion is/was empty, and they were protecting it for a new arrival who would be moving in soon.

ABOUT THE CHARACTER: Meiling is a youkai living in the world of Gensokyo. Youkai in Gensokyo are humanoid beings akin to ghosts or demons, who can and will thrive on human flesh, have longer lifespans, possess great strength, and are generally troublemakers. For a youkai though, Meiling is surprisingly friendly, only violent when a threat arises, and doesn't have desire for human meat in her diet.

If Meiling could be summed up in one word, it would be loyal. She is known as the “Colorful Rainbow Gatekeeper” of the Scarlet Devil Mansion, a mysterious mansion located in Gensokyo. As strange as Gensokyo is, the Mansion is even more so, being built in more European style than most other locations. It's run by Remilia and Flandre scarlet, a pair of vampire sisters who are quite ruthless, so one must be loyal to put up with their demands of security and privacy. Even if belittled by possible intruders, the vampires, or the other members of the mansion, Sakuya Izayoi and Patchouli Knowledge, she goes out every day to stand guard without question.

Meiling is also somewhat laid-back and care-free, having idle chit-chat with anyone who would deign to speak with her, regardless of race. The only time she gets really violent is if you try to bust through the Mansion's gates without permission, and then lets herself go all out defending her mistresses. Otherwise, she's a polite, cheerful young youkai who you wouldn't know any different from a human speaking with you if it weren't for the fact you were in Gensokyo. This leaves most people with a positive opinion of her, even if they're a human.

Unfortunately, the other word that really describes Meiling well is lazy. As noted, she performs tai chi every day then has a nap around lunchtime. She tends to do this while working, which can allow for intruders to slip by her much easier. The only time she seems to work hard is if anyone actually makes it past her without permission, but even then if you get right back out, she won't pursue violence or work and let you go. Just most other situations you see her in she's either talking idly or nodding off. Her laid-back nature does not help when contributing to this. Also, like most youkai, she most likely has a weakness against any holy or spiritual based attacks, or things such as charms, spells, wards, barriers, or chants.

Meiling also seems to be of Chinese descent, so much that most people in the fandom and even the creator now refer to her as Chuugoku/China. She has a lot of pride in her home country, giving more fire to her aspects of loyalty to home. She uses a lot of Chinese based martial arts as her main form of attacking, making her naturally a very well balanced fighter with no weaknesses (beyond what her race gives her) but no real strengths either. Like most everyone in Touhou, she can use Spell Cards as well, cards that grant her great danmaku (bullet) spraying powers for a short time. All of hers are based on floral patterns.

Meiling has a high sense of honor in that she will face off against you in a fight if you merely ask her to. This is also the best way to take her down is through a match like this and overwhelm her quickly. She will hold no ill-will towards you if you win.

Her biggest desire seems to be just to keep peace. In a world as busy, diverse, and randomly violent as Gensokyo, this is an important thing to have. She has no interest in the bizarre racial tensions of the land nor any of its needless violence unless it's to protect her mistresses. She seems genuinely happy in her work and role despite the hardships, and in that, she is truly the best gatekeeper a vampire kid could ask for.

Her history is a short one so far. In 'Embodiment of Scarlet Devil' she is unsuccessful in blocking Reimu Hakurei and Marisa Kirisame's intrusion of the manor. In 'Immaterial and Missing Power' she is around guarding the Mansion as always, but not actively participating in the hunt for Suika Ibuki. In 'Shoot The Bullet' she is photographed in combat by Aya Shameimaru for purposes unknown. Her biggest role so far has been in 'Touhou Hisoutenku' where she goes after who she believes to be Taisui Xingjun, a Chinese god of calamities, only to find it was a gigantic catfish, promptly beating him up for causing a ruckus and making her search for him to begin with.

THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: The sun was up directly above the Scarlet Devil Mansion, shining brightly. This would be when the mistresses would be most asleep, wanting to avoid the sun that burned them so. The guards would have to be most diligent at this hour so that they weren't disturbed while sleeping, lest the consequences for failing be more dire. It was also lunchtime, and after Meiling had scarfed down some dumplings and tea, she began to settle down and stretch out. Slowly, she began to perform a full round of tai chi, moving elegantly from one position to the next. The movements and meal relaxed her both, causing her to prop herself up by the gate sign and begin to nod off.

Just as she was about to fall asleep, she noticed a shadow moving across her eyelids go creeping past the gate. A familiar witch's hat formed as she opened her eyes, making her quickly snap back to reality.

“Marisa! You were here last week! What are you doing here again so soon? Do you have an appointment? The mistresses are asleep now so you'll have to come back later!” she said, sticking her hand out and intending to stop her there.

“Um, nope! Was just gonna barge in and take some books, of course! Whaddya expect from the best witch in Gensokyo?” Marisa replied.

“If you take one step further, I'll have to punch you out, you know! There's still time to turn back and not waste this beautiful day!”

Marisa sighed. “Fine, I can see how important this all is to you. Sheesh, enough with the formalities. I'm going! I'm going!” The witch began to walk off in a huff.

Satisfied, Meiling returned to her gate and settled back into her sleeping position. She nodded off almost right away, snores filling the air. It was then Marisa quietly sneaked past and began her raid of the Mansion.

Meiling would have hell to pay for this later.

FIRST-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: [Meiling is sitting outside the castle by the lobby, staring at her new journal. She's flipping through it really fast, looking a bit lost.]

Hey, Patchy! Are you out here? You left one of your big ol' books by my gate! It's got all kinds of funny writing in it and I think it's writing down what I'm shouting! Is this one of your enchantments? It's pretty silly! Why would you do that?

[This is when she realizes she's not quite in Kansas anymore, looking around.]

Hey, speaking of, this isn't the mistresses' gate! Where am I? Was I sleep walking? Oh no, Sakuya's gonna knife me for sure! I gotta get back there!

[Looking at the sun. Oh, is it lunchtime already?]

Right after my nap, of course. Can't go anywhere if I'm not energized.

[With that, Meiling sits cross-legged against a pillar outside, giving a large stretch, a yawn, and nodding off, drooling a bit as she snores.]

INTENT: Meiling would be a fun character to have to balance out my serious elf and anything else serious going on at Paradisa at large. The Touhou cast here is great and I'd love for her to interact with them and everyone else while here.
