Stumbled by chance on the topic of Wicca, an esotherik movement but the people involved like to call it a religion. well, it's hard to read the wikipedia pages in English as well as German with a straight face. 60 years ago a single guy pulled the whole thing out of his ass hat and suddenly thousands of people believed in horned gods and goddesses

Homeopathy. Thought up by some quack two hundred years ago and is a serious alternative to scientific proven medical remedies to millions of people. The mind boggles.
