Dollhouse

I almost passed on this show after hearing tons of negative stuff about it.  But a few people told me that it gets better.  Ok, I stuck it out and watched all but the last episode of the first season (will get to that one tonight).  If only all of the episodes could have been as good as the one (the eleventh) I saw last night.  It was called Briar ( Read more... )

Omega is pure Joss. There is one point where I could believe that was the original vision he had and the entire series is in existance to make that moment happen. I got into it late and watched through the end and was surprised that they picked it up. I really liked the last two episodes. Let me know what you think.

I'm the minority (and I've watched nearly everything he's done) but I just don't think Wheedon is that good.

I think, much like George Lucas, he is a great idea guy. But when it comes to execution, I'm not impressed.

Plus his stories seem to all suffer from the same three problems--1) couples can never be happy long term (usually results in one partner dying in some way) 2) two or three solid characters are surrounded by a ton of two-dimensional characters (I felt Firefly is the worse offender here) and 3) stories seem to start strong and then just fizzle out.

You must have missed the really good episodes in all of the shows he has done. Or like you said, you are just in the minority. In all of his shows the first seasons seemed to like the punch the later shows had, except Firefly. I thought the entire crew, not just two characters, were more than 2D. Maybe I got more out of it than you. In just one episode, Out of Gas, almost all of the crew gets detailed backgrounds.

As for happy, long term couples in TV shows, if what Joss did was the norm I wouldn't like it. But since nearly every TV show goes for happy cookie cutter couples and relationships I like the direction he takes things.

I've watched every season of Buffy and Angel, as well as all of Firefly. Also read his run on Astonishing X-Men ( ... )

I enjoyed Dollhouse, but it was tough at first. I decided to tough it out and it started to get interesting, and now I like it, but I don't think it will get picked up for another season. :(
