I almost passed on this show after hearing tons of negative stuff about it. But a few people told me that it gets better. Ok, I stuck it out and watched all but the last episode of the first season (will get to that one tonight). I think, much like George Lucas, he is a great idea guy. But when it comes to execution, I'm not impressed.
Plus his stories seem to all suffer from the same three problems--1) couples can never be happy long term (usually results in one partner dying in some way) 2) two or three solid characters are surrounded by a ton of two-dimensional characters (I felt Firefly is the worse offender here) and 3) stories seem to start strong and then just fizzle out.

As for happy, long term couples in TV shows, if what Joss did was the norm I wouldn't like it. But since nearly every TV show goes for happy cookie cutter couples and relationships I like the direction he takes things.
