"Hey brother Christian with your high and mighty errand, your actions speak so loud I can't hear a word your saying...Hey man of science with your perfect rules of measure, can you improve this place with the data that you've gathered?" (I want To Conquer the World - Bad Religion) If you've ever seen Pulp Fiction, you must remember the drug dealer. The guy who looked like Jesus. What a perfect metaphor is that? Jesus is just somebody who is there to give us what makes us happy. He's not a perfect person, but he's good to us, gives us what we want. We have choices of how to do it. Really it's all the same, but at least we think there's a choice. People need to understand not to take the Bible so literally, it is a story, which we will never know all the facts about. But one thing we do know is that you cannot feed the masses with 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish. My english teacher takes that as a great metaphor for the power of sharing, I'd never thought of that. The point is though that Religion isn't supposed to be the force controlling our lives, it's supposed to be something that makes us happy. It should be more like an intricate part of our life and less like a drug that induces us with joy and at the same time controls us and leads us to take actions against our nature.
Though I can hardly say we do a good job contorlling ourselves otherwise. To the other extreme from religion we have science. Teh atheists who spend entire lifetimes trying to solve the mysteries that are brought by existence. Every new answer yeilds only more questions, yet we constantly try to move forward. But if you apply science's own logic, we will NEVER know of god. We can search the universe, this galaxy and a million others, marching on through the infinity of time, analyzing everything scientifically. We have split the atom and as far as we can see, the smallest piece of everything is energy. Everything is made up of polarized charges. The science way of doing things is to just keep going untill we've gone too far. And thats what people are going to do. We're going to go so far that we either prove God and go to war over it and destroy ourselves physically, or we're going to disprove God and the world will go through psychological suicide and abandon hope. Either way we're screwed.
I'm not partial to either religion or science. I don't believe in God, I don't believe in some man wearing a white coat, and I don't believe that somebody who spends thier lifetime reading a book, wheither it be the Bible or a textbook, can have all or even any of the answers. The only thing you can believe in is yourself. The world is not a documented experiment for us. You can't learn life from a textbook, you've got to get it as you go along. Science should leave it's hunt for god where we are. Everything is made of energy, thats good. Energy flows, energy works, Energy can be controlled by humans, so the atheists are happy, energy can be used by a greater force so the theists are happy. You can't live a life based on paradigms, it's asking to fail. The ideological war between science and religion is both futile and counterproductive. Neither side will win, and everybody is losing constantly.
