I'd tell you that I'll be going by myself and don't need any help, but I know if you don't go searching for him with me, you'll look on your own and end up missing too.

As he said he would be, Damon is standing outside of the Tower waiting for Elena. He doesn't remember the last time that he saw Stephan, which would mean that it has been too long. Although he honestly thought, his younger brother was brooding again or... something.
He turns to look at the door when he hears it open.
"This wouldn't be the first time we've formed a rescue party."
The last time, they managed to save Stephan. Barely. But they did. See? He is trying to be comforting again. Vaguely. They also had a good idea before they left what could have happened to him and where to go. It's not like they have the same enemies here or any enemies lately.
"...he didn't get into any trouble while he was here that I don't know about, right?"
It would be laughable to think of Stephan getting into trouble before Damon, but he's wracking his brain for what else could have happened. Stephan is careful, not reckless, not leaving a trail behind where he could be caught. He doesn't kill humans anymore.
Elena doesn't waste time in leaving her room and rushing down the stairs, out the lobby. Every minute that ticks on by is a minute that Stefan is lost to her. It doesn't help she's been reading entries lately in the network asking for people they haven't seen again, fearing the Rift has taken them. They can take people with the blink of an eye. Something about that is far more terrifying than anything else they have ever faced
( ... )
Though she looks like she is keeping it together, Damon knows her. He saw her that day that Stephan was dragged to the vampire house in the woods. They were standing in the rain, and she was starting to lose it. They knew where he was then.
Somehow this is worse. There is nowhere to go. There is no plan to hash out. There is no one's clutches to pull him from before it's too late. They have no enemies. Most people that Damon has run into would be no real problem for Stephan to handle.
And he would try his best to stay... alive (oh the misuse of that word) for Elena's sake.
"You never know. We could quit the rescue party business," Damon says smoothly though he is obviously more upset than what is showing too. He has shoved those emotions into a corner, however.
He raises an eyebrow at the comment. "You're not all up in lover boy's business?" Granted, Damon would have normally noticed this but he has been trying to find his way around Chicago, make contacts, figure out what exactly they could be up against at any given time. "

Maybe that's what made the difference.
She knew where Stefan was and she knew what could happen to him if they didn't get to him as soon as possible. The not knowing keeps her suspended in this rope, a thousand feet off the ground, and one small step where the balance falters and she ends up falling to the ground. Elena was here far longer than either of the men, and she had to learn to accept there might be a life where one of them wasn't there.
She trusts Stefan more than anybody, trusts that he'd always know what he was doing, but he would never, ever let her worry like this. Especially not in this city, where nothing is guaranteed. He'd let her know where he was every step of the way, whether they'd worked out their problems or not.
And those problems seem so distant, now. Elena had wanted to find herself and where she stood without him in that role that often takes over everything else. Now she can't remember why that was. Elena shoots him a sharp look. It's the Let's not do that now, Damon she gives him so often that he'll

[that's not true Damon and you know it.]
He's a big boy.
Kind of.
I figured he was with you or moping around again in a basement to collect dust and brood over his guilt.

This isn't funny, Damon.
Can we not do that right now?
when the next question comes, and she's too worried to keep at any of it, so they're scratched out.]
It's been too long. He doesn't answer any of my journal entries. He isn't at the Tower but his things are still in the room. This isn't like him.

I'll meet you outside the Tower.
