I had a very hard time finding any good international food that wasn't Chinese when I was in Japan. The Italian, American, and Mexican food places in tokyo were all terrrrible.

Ahhh, my friend, you should have travelled up to the far frozen north, in the middle of no where... they've got nothin' to see, nothin' to do, but *man* can they do international foods. Though, actually, all the mexican places do suck.... we make our own ^_^; American food in Tokyo... Hard Rock! Thats damn fine food :-)
