A `once upon a r e d moon legend

“…the two forces come together with alarming velocity.”

When the world first erupts in fire and water, the two forces come together with alarming velocity. Every day, it seems like, the atmosphere vibrates with the harsh sounds that emit from the earth, groaning beneath the tyrants that have settled upon it - both far too willing to tear apart the planet in their quest to become the ruler, the owner.

All animals fear then, fear that this is the end of life as they know it. And they are right to fear when the two colossal beings crash together again and again, their places upon the world continuously shifting, circling one another like the wolves they are. Indeed, it is these two beings - with their names lost in the passage of time, the dissolving of stone that should have held forever - who squabble like children, which are the first wolves. The first two to be deemed children of the gods of old, those from back when the world was bathed in religion and to be neutral was to be cursed on Earth as in Heaven.

The lady of fire cries out whenever the seas spread over her body, cooling her form to where she is land. Only for the baron of water to be singed beyond repair, fur sliding upward with evaporation. The oceans rage, the land quakes, and the volcanoes continuously spit forth molten lava, to where all are either drowned, buried beneath rubble, or suffocating with sticky ash lying thick in his or her lungs.

Those wolves that are not like these great giants hide; what could be called bravery elsewhere is fool-hardy here, and all know it. Who dares to try and calm these savage beasts - these who are so intent upon ripping one another apart that they are blind to the destruction that rains down daily? The few who do creep out of the bowels of the earth where shelter is to be sought (though not necessarily had) are struck down too easily by the great wolves, teeth flashing and blunt nails grinding trees down to sawdust as they thrash upon the world.

However, all hope is not lost, despite what might be called the earth’s darkest hour.
There are others, similar to them, that hold powers that may be able to overcome the battling creatures, should these few would-be saviors come together. Alone, each is weaker than the entities that control fire and water, but together they may stand a chance. And yet, there is reason to fear their unity.

The entities that have prowled upon the world for forever and a day were taught never to meet, be it in friendship or battle. To hold so much power, so much energy, can shake the earth to its very core. Because of this, the wolves are wary of one another, corrupt in their powers, and they are filled with sins not yet committed.

And they might stay that way, waiting for time to speed forward on its own without their prompting. But, the earth cries out once more, a desperate scream that makes all cry out their own pain to the heavens above. The large island they’ve all lived on, spreading out across the water like a too-large plate set afloat within a filled sink, begins to shake and rumble, cracks forming at the edges before sliding inward, all coming to meet near the center. The ground nearest those cracks is suddenly blanketed in water, and a large wave forces six separate landmasses to retreat to their own sides of the world. For a moment, it seems as if a seventh piece might be achieved, but the lord over earth chooses then to let his voice be heard.

The lady of the ice also shows her displeasure, white canines flashing as she strikes out against the water-controlling wolf, nipping at his heels and causing him to return to his deep seas. It is then that the fire wolf believes she has won and lifts her snout to the sky, smoke pouring from her maw as she prepares to let loose her largest explosion yet.

The wolves that control air and the darkness are not yet ready to let such a thing happen. The twin breezes that are air slice at her jaw, and red splatters onto the land below unceremoniously, oozing off and slipping into the ocean. Darkness is weaved around the fiery creature, and the lord of light is quick to blind the beast when she howls out her rage. And then, the telepathic one, she who might be considered an esper now, draws on the powers of other deities, feeding off their strength to send both wolves crashing to the ground, entangled within and upon one another.

The illusionist goes to work then, calming them, whispering words of gentleness and loving kindness that makes their limbs grow heavy. Exhausted from their battle and the others’ supposed betrayal, the two titans slip beneath the waves, to where only their skulls are still above the salty water. The others rest upon the wolves, knowing that to release their powers would lead to yet another fight. Instead, they allow themselves to merge with the other two, creating strange formations upon the newly named island of Arkane.

They lay there still, and while no harm comes to those that live upon the island, the two beasts can occasionally be heard shifting, can be felt in the rise and fall of the land.

For, you see, one day the wolves will awaken and the world will once more be thrown into chaos.
