If she'd know exactly how long she'd been asleep, Isabel would have been much more upset.

As she kept dreaming.

It had been a long day, and Mary longed to crawl into her motel room bed. There had been a letter from Danny, finally. But the news wasn't good. He'd been delayed in returning to the country as the Marines needed him elsewhere. He wasn't happy about it either, as his dad had filled him in on how Frank Connell had gotten out of jail early.

Mary tried to fight sleep as she read Danny's letter again, but she slowly drifted off to sleep anyway, dreaming of the tiny house where Frank had raised her.

Another place she didn't recognize.

Isabel waited, watching to see what would happen.

Mary was staring at a doorway. Nothing could be seen in the darkened room, but she could hear a little girl saying, "Daddy, no!" At the sound of the girl's voice, Mary turned pale.

Isabel realized what was going on and her fist clenched even though there was nothing she could do.

Mary felt absolutely powerless to help the little girl in the bedroom. She started to cry.

There was something she could do. "Mary," Isabel said quietly. "You need to wake up. This is just a dream. A nightmare."

"She said no and he wouldn't stop," sobbed Mary. "There's nothing I can do to help her."

"Mary, WAKE UP!" Isabel insisted.

And Mary did wake up, almost jumping off the bed.
