Wendla appreciated Scotty's concern for her -- it was nice to have someone looking out for her well-being out here, even if it was a stranger. But she wasn't going to stay cooped up in the house forever and she might as well look around early on before she lost the nerve. After all, in a seemingly empty city, it didn't seem more dangerous outside than inside -- much more unnerving, but not more dangerous -- and, well, she was young but she was -- she thought, anyway -- a very capable and intelligent young woman and this was an emergency situation. There was no reason Scotty should be out running around while she sat around. They needed provisions and things, and she was a little frightened of nightfall now. Waking up had sort of betrayed her recently.

So Wendla started out. She wouldn't be gone long she told herself. She'd just see what was around. And chances were if she found something really interesting she'd have to go back to the house she and Scotty had decided to claim for the moment and wait for him. Wendla was trying to ( ... )

If it was a dream, it was a frighteningly real one. As she walked down the street, she couldn't help but notice the little things, like cracks in the pavement or the paint was chipping off from some of the signs. It was all too elaborate and detailed not to be real.

"Hello," she said, walking towards the girl. "This is going to sound like a strange question, but can you tell me where I am?"

A pained expression etched itself onto Wendla's features and she wrung her hands. So they really weren't alone.

"No," she called back, taking a step back to keep distance between them. She didn't want to be the one to explain this mess -- didn't even know what the words were. "I suppose that you just woke up here one day?" she continued with a half-hearted smile.

"Just today," Florence managed to say, her voice shaking despite her best attempts to keep it steady. "You did too? And you don't know - does anyone know where we are?"

She took a deep breath in an attempt to calm herself. "I'm sorry, this is just all so unbelievable. It feels like some sort of bad dream."
