At least it had stopped raining. That was about the only thing that could be said so far for life here, Florence thought as she wandered down the streets, still in search of some kind of explanation. Her hopes of actually finding one was dwindling, but she wasn't about to give up just yet.

She caught sight of Scotty and headed over, noting with some amusement the lovely hat he was wearing. "Keeping busy, I see."

He honestly hadn't expected to see anyone else, but he reigns in his surprise, smiling up at her as he leans back on his heels. Okay, so he doesn't look that amazing, but he's a certain amount of fabulous that he thinks he can own, so he decides to just go with it. "I can't stand to eat another canned meal," he tells her very seriously, resuming his process of dropping seeds into the soil. "I thought I'd start a garden -- a community one. Wanna help?" he smiles brightly, looking up from under his hat. "You know you wanna play around in the dirt," he says in a sing-songy voice, laughing softly.

"I can't blame you," Florence said, kneeling down beside him so she could take a better look at the garden. "I can't stand the canned stuff either, but unfortunately cooking is not one of my skills. I'm not sure gardening is either, but I'd be happy to give it a try."

"I've never actually gardened before but I'm not a stranger to manual labor, unfortunately," he comments as he scoots over to continue working on this particular row. "I don't mind being the city's resident chef either. I should probably break into one of these cafes and take over," he says with a smile, sitting back on his heels to smile at her. "How are you doing?" His tone is slightly more serious, genuinely inquiring after her well-being and her integration into city life.

Of course, what would a sitcom be without the timely arrival of said neighbor?

Since the power outtages, Lex had been trying to find out out either the cause or at least some way to generate power themselves. The club had a generator, but Lex had yet been able to figure out how it worked, though it was one of his current projects. Another was searching out other buildings with generators so at least they would know where power was if they needed it in an emergency. Plus it got him out and moving when working on figuring out the club generator got to be too tedious.

It was the hat that first drew his attention as he was walking past and at first he thought it was one of the young girls. But when Scotty happened to lift his head, Lex couldn't help letting out a small bark of laughter. "Do I dare ask what you are doing?" He asked as he altered his course from both curiosity and to say hello.

Scotty's stomach may give a twist or two when it hears the familiar voice, and he has to take a moment to appreciate that nervous sort of fluttery feeling. It reminds Scotty of the fact that there's more to this city than struggling to survive, more than dust and emptiness.

"Are you asking or just daring to?" he counters, turning his head to smile up at him. Lex can say what he wants about the hat -- Scotty rather appreciates the fact that his face isn't too hot at the moment. He feels cheery and goofy and all in all he approves of it.

"I'm asking." Lex clarified as he stopped next to where Scotty was working, hands going into his pockets. He raised both eyebrows in an amused expression, though his smile was very knowing. As if the thought of what he and Scotty had done was on his mind at the moment.

Scotty was holding up in terms of not being shy about all of this until that look, and now he blushes faintly as he looks away, back at the ground, and tries to get himself back into check. After a moment he turns his eyes back to Lex, the smile on his face wider.

"I'm gardening. We need some fresh vegetables or else I'm going to have to kill Chef Boyardee." Not that the canned food they're eating has any sort of recognizable labels, but it makes Scotty feel better to refer to brands he knows. Like all of this is familiar. "Or myself. And since Boyardee isn't anywhere around here..." he trails off teasingly.

Peter had been ambling around the town, trying to get comfortable with his new surroundings. If he knew his way around, he was sure this strange place would be much less scary. Not to mention that walking helped to clear his mind.

As soon as Peter saw the hat, he made a beeline for it. Cheerful didn't describe much in this strange town, so he wasn't going to waste an opportunity.

"Having fun?" Peter asked, smiling at the stranger.

Scotty's surprised to hear an unfamiliar voice and he sits back, taking in the stranger. Young, again, though not quite so young as Wendla and Anna. It's unsettling that about half of the people Scotty's met have been school age or younger; what sort of place takes children? Not that the person in front of him is a child, but Scotty's been wondering that lately as he eats with Anna and Wendla.

Moment of surprise and concern over, Scotty smiles kindly and brushes some of the dirt off his gloves. "Not yet, but I will when there's vegetables to cook with. I'm Scotty Wandell." He peels a glove off and holds his hand out to shake. "And you are?"

"Peter Simmons," he said, quickly shaking Scotty's hand. "I never thought I'd want to eat my veggies, but they're starting to sound appealing. I love the hat, by the way," Peter grinned.

In fact, the hat looked like one he used to play dress up in when he was little. Peter couldn't decide if that was slightly disconcerting, since this place was so different, or if it was just funny that a grown man was wearing his dress up hat.

"So, um, do you need help? My mom and I had a garden one summer, so maybe I won't be useless."

Oh Scotty very much approves of Peter. He loves too that his gaydar is humming, but then again Scotty can't help but feel selfishly glad that there are quite a few gays or at least inclined-toward-men around already. In all these unfamiliar things at least he isn't alone in his sexuality.

"Thank you," he says brightly, dragging out the you in a very slight drawl that is more extension of sound than a reflection of his Mississippi roots; he'd been careful to avoid picking up a heavy accent. "I figured it would be safe; I don't think the fashion police have arrived yet."

He grins here before he nods, gesturing to the seed packets. "Help yourself! There's an extra shovel but no gloves, sorry," he apologizes with a slight frown. "I didn't expect to see many people," he smirks slightly, without much amusement.
