It worried Wendla that she she had become so complacent, had convinced herself that everything was "normal" now, whatever that meant. She wasn't looking to live in fear anymore. Of course not -- and who could without it tearing them apart? But something nagged at her in the back of her mind, every time she sat around the house with nothing to occupy her. This reminder of how not normal everything really was, how uncertain their situation, that even if she looked at Scotty and Anna like a new family, ultimately her livelihood now was on her own shoulders. She was tired of feeling like the house was this safe little bubble where she could try and forget these things, while the outside loomed, ready to swallow her up if they should be chased out of the house she had so firmly planted herself in ( ... )

Jude jumps a little at the sound -- everything is so quiet here -- and turns to the direction it came from. There's a girl. Who looks quite surprised at seeing him or seeing someone here in general, he can't be sure. She called for him though, so he walks towards her -- he's still just in his socks, making it slightly uncomfortable to walk around, and probably leaves him looking a bit silly. He's self-conscious enough to button his shirt a bit though ( ... )

A little bit of relief washed over Wendla, though she was still standing tensely and made no move to approach him. He seemed genuinely lost, and though he was dressed oddly, Wendla had begun to expect that from strangers around the city. "No, sorry," she replied cautiously, her expression troubled. "I would but I don't know." She clutched the fabric of her skirt in her hands and fidgeted, trying to gauge whether this could be some sort of strange trap.

Jude frowns in confusion. She doesn't know either?

He stops a little way away from her, since she looks really nervous, and for all he knows she could've just appeared here and is just as lost as him, so he doesn't want to scare her. She doesn't sound American either. He decides to ignore how crazy it might make him sound and just be honest.

"I.. forgive me if this sounds insane, but..." He smiles a little, so as to show he's not dangerous or anything, even if he is dressed like someone less than sane, and will now probably sound like it too. "I was in New York. I was in my apartment, and then I woke up here, down by the river," he points back to where he'd woken up, "and I don't know how I got here." He tries to ignore how scary that really is.

Well, he sounded honest enough. She swallowed and then, after a moment, stepped forward and offered her hand as a peace offering. "My name is Wendla Bergmann," she offered weakly. It seemed nicer that way, somehow, to introduce herself before she explained how bad things really were. "If that makes you insane, then there are other insane people here." It sounded almost like a joke when she put it like that, but she was completely serious.
