Character Name; Flynn Scifo
Canon; Tales of Vesperia
Canon Point; Post-game
Age; 21

House; Heimdall. Flynn is the white knight, the hero of the people, the dedicated fixer of all the world's problems of his canon.
Power; Damage drain.

Personality; Flynn is the game's secondary protagonist, omnipresent even if he's never in the game's main party, and there's a reason for that: by the protagonist's own admission, he's the one who should've been the hero, the one Yuri gives all the credit for his own good deeds.

Flynn's motivation from the time he's been very young is to repay the people of the Lower Quarter, the people who saved him when he was living on the street. He and Yuri grew up together, best friends, orphans struggling to make it off the charity of people who were themselves very poor; to repay them, Flynn decided to dedicate himself to becoming a knight -- one of the few ways for a commoner to advance in Zaphias -- so that he could help change the corrupt system and make life better for those kind people. Flynn believes very strongly in obeying the law and doing the right thing; he wants to save lives, champion the weak, and help the elderly across the street. He's firm, moral, confident, and modest.

Or so everyone thinks. Sodia and Yuri and the NPCs of the game all laud Flynn as the ideal knight, but that's because when Flynn dedicated himself to becoming a knight, he literally dedicated himself to becoming a knight. The rough-edged proud street-rat from the Lower Quarter molded himself into the kind of person everyone could admire, the kind of person who no one could fault, because to do otherwise would be to create opportunities for people to end his career early out of prejudice. He taught himself patience and tolerance; he learned the intricacies he'd need to survive the politics of the country; he studied long and hard to learn how to supplement his raw physical power with healing artes, turning himself into a force to be reckoned with.

And he was successful. Flynn has always bested Yuri in everything: from physical confrontations, to foot races, to catching the attention of women; but he made himself even better. Although he met with great resentment along the way from the grandfathered-in nobles and sons of nobles who populated the ranks of the knights, many of them much older and more veteran than himelf, no one could find flaw in Flynn's stellar track record, and he rose through the ranks: first a knight, then a lieutenant, then a captain, and finally becoming Commandant of the Imperial Knights.

But Flynn still lives suppressing his true nature. Competitive and quick-tempered at heart, he's had to become more orderly and composed; even though it hurts him every time he has to stick to the letter of the law and look the other way while criminals are pardoned from their crimes and legalities block his ability to help people, he tries to stick to his guns. It's more important to change the system than to win every small battle along the way, especially when he knows that stepping out of line could end his chances to change that system. But being around Yuri brings out those dangerous tendencies in him; his second-in-command rails at him that Flynn just isn't the same when he's around Yuri. We see him falter and second-guess himself repeatedly in the course of the game, and Sodia can't stand that it's only Yuri who can hurt Flynn this way; we even see him thinking in more crafty, resourceful ways, to the point where he would look the other way while Yuri commits crimes in the name of good, and even rationalizes Yuri's more severe criminal acts -- like vigilante murder. Yuri is the potential for Flynn's downfall.

And Flynn just doesn't care. He's very devoted to his friends, believes in paying back his debts, and naturally friendly: he smiles a lot, warm and friendly to the people around him, and wins the loyalty and affection of others easily. He's very supportive and it frustrates him when he sees his friends in a bad place -- or putting themselves down. He's actually very fluffy; he blushes easily and gets excited about small things. He's not a pushover, but his admiration runs deep and is hard to lose once it's won, which has worked to his detriment in canon when one of his idols turned traitor. Flynn waited until lives were at stake and it was almost too late before he could make himself come to terms with what he'd already suspected.

He's also very good-looking, and Yuri mentions (in the PS3 version) that when Flynn is around, he's never gotten women to look twice at him: they're only interested in Flynn. Which is unfortunate, because flirtation goes right over Flynn's head, and he's happier to talk politics with women than let them get him in a locked room.

Like Yuri, he's very smart and a combat prodigy, able to learn new techniques almost effortlessly after watching them, but studying is not... really his thing. He's a man of action, and secretly, he's always been rather proud of his talents. He has a bit of vanity to him, make no mistake.

It's a good thing he's adorable, or someone would have taken him down a peg or two a long time ago. Like by telling him he needs to stop cooking before he kills someone. When he follows the recipe he does very well -- especially with meat dishes -- but when he doesn't follow the recipe, he makes people sick. But he's just so excited about it, and he's doing it for you! because he likes you! he and because he just loves cooking so much!. He's like a big puppy dog. How could you kick a puppy...? "Better just to grin and bear it," says everyone he's ever known.

[Flynn kept his hand lightly on the hilt of his sword as he looked up at the imposing gray walls of what purported to be a clothing store.]

[It felt strange to be trading in his armor for civilian clothes. It had been so long since he'd been able to just -- relax, even on his days off. Hell, he'd spent half of those days off going down to the Lower Quarter still in his armor, checking to make sure everyone was all right and no one needed an advocate in the knights. It was all too common for the Lower Quarter to be neglected in daily patrols, or for their concerns to go ignored or underrepresented...]

[Here, his only duty was really to enjoy himself. He wasn't sure he was ever going to get used to that.]

[But the first step was to find civilian clothing. Flynn steeled his shoulders and headed for the door.]

[...And he hoped that whatever he picked out would turn out to be a decent color when it brightened.]
