I'm a quitter.

SO. I'm mostly likely quitting my comics class. It's just... way too much work for a three hour class (she says that we should treat it like a studio and not have other classes that day. Yeah right). And I'm already overwhelmed and freaking out about it. SO instead I'm going to look into other illustration classes. Or maybe do an independent ( Read more... )

Sorry to hear the comics class didn't work out for you--I'm quite perplexed at the teacher's unrealistic expectations for you guys; yes; making comics does entail a lot of time and devotion, but it's not impossible to be able to do it and everything else. Bleh. Methinks an independent study may be a good way to go; I will hope for the best that you can manage to find a way to learn comics.

I'm glad that the playFull/playMe class is going along great for you though!

Hahah, you of all people would definitely know about how much work comics require. My issues were partially a workload thing (beginning assignment: 10 one panel comics with the characters drawn separately from the settings, and a one page response comic to a reading. That was the just getting used to comics thing.). But most of it was just me not fitting in at all with the class. I don't normally try to fit into the mold... but I could just tell that the interests of others wouldn't lead to me having successful workshopping experiences. I guess so many of my stories are just so personal to me that I couldn't handle the thought of enduring art school bitchiness about my characters, my drawing style, the fact that I actually like narratives, etc etc.

Unfortunately, I'm not doing an independent study, but instead I'm taking advanced fashion illustration. (And hopefully I'll be able to get some connections from the teacher since he likes me.) I guess I'll just have to try the comic thing in my spare time.

Yikes. Not having gone through a course in school for comics, I'm not sure what to make of the approach that they had you doing at your school. It just comes across as unnecessary to me. Then again, it could just be that I taught myself a different way to go about it, so who knows. As for not fitting in--again; that irks me; not because of you, but the fact that the class would be so critical as far as interests are concerned. I think that's largely a reason why I'm going to pursue my animation degree as opposed to getting one in sequential arts, simply because there'd be needless conflict with the latter. I don't believe there's a wrong way to go about comics, and perhaps I'm misunderstanding, but it just seems that your class had a very limited range of what they wanted in a comic, and that just bothers me. Gah, I've gone into ranting mode again ( ... )
