Tim's Vermeer

That's the title of an amazing documentary I just saw - it's been at the top of my movie list lately. It's about this inventor/entrepreneur in San Antonio who, around 2009 became obsessed with re-creating a painting by Vermeer - from scratch. He actually did it - a labor that took him around ten months just to execute the brushwork. His object ( Read more... )

I'll check that out...though at this stage it may only be US region. Also hoping it is or gets on to Netflix as, while the UK Netflix is not worth subscribing to, I have a US hack. That's where I regularly get my good documentary fix.

Yes… we have a 'Sundance Cinema' here in Madison. I find the place a bit pretentious, but at least it tends to be the local harbor for serious documentaries and foreign 'art' films. I suppose I'm lucky to be living in a college town that offers a range of current films.

I hope it lives up to your expectations. There's a surprisingly emotional moment near the end, which I found both complex and touching.

Was the re-created painting later sold as a forgery..?

LOL … because of the publicity generated by the film, I rather doubt it'll get sold anytime soon - even as a forgery. Given the amount of effort put in by the inventor/artist, I don't think he'd be willing to part with it for a while yet. While it is a bona fide 100% hand-painted painting, it is also the result of an experiment which means its eventual home ought to be some sort of museum, like The Smithsonian.

I'll have to research the original Vermeer paintings in order to better appreciate the documentary. Sorry to have missed you last night on the phone. A box is on the way to you. My understanding is it should reach you on Wednesday.

Big HUGS!

So sorry I didn't get to talk with you, Neil. Now you know where I was - LOL

This was a baking weekend for me …I sent off the goods to my brother, who's got a birthday this week too. Just got a lovely email from him proclaiming that my efforts were a major hit. Somehow I managed to revive a family recipe that we had all thought was lost. (I've been pumping air and yelling Yessss! ever since hearing from my bro).

Hope your trip to Texas is going well. Will be checking my mail.
Big hugs!

Glad you found joy in the kitchen! :) What did you bake? I'm delighted it was a success! I leave for Texas on Thursday.

It was Hungarian nut roll…. except that through a lot of trial and error I discovered that what Alex was craving was not the official version (as demonstrated on YouTube). He had been hankering for our mom's version, which nobody in the family knew how to make.
Over the holidays my sis-in-law led me to my mom's old recipe notebook and we found the recipe - in Hungarian, and damn cryptic about details. So I had to translate, and then make stab guesses about what to do with the ingredients.
Finally, I figured out that the dough was rather like pie crust, so I acted accordingly …and, amazingly, it worked. I tried it out on Bonnie and her housemate - success! So I was emboldened to bake it for my bro as a surprise birthday present.
And there you have it :0)
