Before last night I'd never been at a party where the cops show up and people start running for the back door. Because legally, there is no such thing as consensual battery, and rightly so. If you have someone who's beating up their significant other in a "non-consensual" manner, there can be all sorts of power dynamics in play to make the victim say yes, this is consensual. Society is indeed harmed by potential (and likely to occur) psychological damage, which can cause problems in the greater arena. Battery is also a crime that does not necessarily require the victim to desire to press charges in order to pursue the case. Offenses are offenses whether they are "consensual" or not. Hence the guy who was convicted for murder after eating somebody who "consented" to be cannibalized.
