Agh! Snakes! (You know, I had a general impression that Nagas were mean.. but reading more about them, they're not necissarily.. and there is some really interesting mythology about them...)
I'll have to think about the whole snake-on-me thing, though :P

I agree with you for the most part. And the word 'hope' is what resonates with me. But I want the new tattoo to match the old tattoo in that there is both a word and an image, and I'm having a hard time coming up with an image. When i 'see' India in my mind, most of the designs that come to me are too intricate for a tattoo, which is why I was looking for ideas, hoping to get a spark of creativity. I'm thinking of trying to draw a kind of stylized version of the tiny clay oil lamps you see during Diwali, as I came into Mumbai for the first time during Diwali.
the deep idea is a really good one: you mentioned you were in Mumbai during Diwali and the flame can resonate with hope really well (have hope come out of the flame or something, depending on your style).
oh man, if you just went by flags, you would have two very coordinating tattoos :-P
other ideas (some more intricate than others): two hands in namaste, peacock feather, a simple henna design (I'm guessing you ruled this out already)

What do you think of that represents / relates to India? You find that word / image and display it on yourself as you do so choose.
