NPR vs. NPR (morning edition vs. weekend edition)

Oct 07, 2009 08:19

This morning, I heard a story on morning edition (www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php) about Safeway doing innovative things to control healthcare costs. I'm generally in favor of what they've done, as I subscribe to the idea that we should encourage what we want and discourage what we don't want.

However, and this is a pretty big however, one of ( Read more... )

Agreed 100% on BMI. It is a terrible measurement tool and I totally disregard it. According to BMI, I am considered obese yet I have a low body fat % and good amount of muscle mass. Everyone should know muscle weighs more than fat, etc etc. If you're trying to losing weight (fat really), I think it makes more sense going by percentage of fat lost and stop focusing so much on weight itself.

BTW - if you want some sort of exercise/activity partner in the East Bay, feel free to hit me up. I am up for anything physically challenging during any season. You should also check out my gym sometime. :D The workout there is very spartan.

I agree that body fat is a much better representative.
Though I'm one of those odd freaks that BMI 'works' with, as in it makes sense.
In August, when I started my ass-kicking regime, my BMI had just hit 25, which is JUST BARELY obese. I'm now down 12 lbs, and my BMI is 23.4, which is 'normal.' My 'ideal' weight I'm shootimg for is to loose another 8 lbs, which would put me in normal again at 22.1.

I'd have to check my percentage... It was somewhere near 23% last time I checked, but that was some time ago. I'm not really tracking it. I wouldn't even be tracking my weight, aside from WW wants me to. My key thing is that hey, my pants fit well again, and heck, I need to wear a belt most days.

FWIW, when I saw you last year I thought you were in better shape than your were when I last saw you regularly (High School) so it surprises me a little that you needed an ass-kicking regime. :)

You seem to be much more structured about your cheese intake. I certainly haven't been depriving myself of real cheese. Easily every other week for me, which is just fine as far as I'm concerned.

bmi is a nice tool in general, but it is just a mathematical equation. for the average person, it gives you a pretty close approximation of what your body mass index is, but athletic people can not use bmi for any realistic measurement because their density of muscle is so high. they weigh more, but are technically smaller, but the equation doesn't understand that.

Exactly! It requires being spread across a population to be a useful measure.

Of course, being part of the 'way outside the norm' part of the population on this one, has be me being almost as acutely sensitive as a mathematical injustice being committed.

Heh. "Mathematical injustice." I'm going to have to remember that one.

the BMI index is way outdated....and it outrageous that they even compare people to a chart made by a Belgian Mathematician from the 1800's - I know it has been updated but not enough.....they should do like we do at the vet and look at body conformation......it should all be individual!!!!
