Anyone have personal recommendations for inexpensive wooden bookshelves from any of the big box stores? At this point I am thinking that it may be back to cinder blocks and boards.

Do you have an IKEA near you at all? They are da bomb for inexpensive high quality bookshelves.

IKEA is a favorite but Craigslist & Freecycle can be cheaper. The downside is that it can be tough to get stuff home without a truck or van.

If you can get IKEA, I've gotten the Billy bookshelf series for very cheap and while they won't last me until I die they are good for a couple of years and cheap enough that they don't hurt

I have two 6' x 3' bookshelves that I bought at Wal-Mart for $40 each. They're pressboard but sturdy and have a nice laminate finish. It was a lot like this unit but the ones available in the store had either a light pine or cherry finish.

If you want REAL wood, I'd recommend unfinished bookshelves from Michael's. Small-ish but inexpensive.

The most inexpensive shelves I've found have been through the office supply stores (Staples, etc). They aren't real wood, and you have to assemble them yourself, but they don't hit you too hard in the wallet.
