A drabble for the princess~ ♥
Spade / G; Chess- Black and white porcelain pieces set; Make your move.

~ * ~

He can't tell the difference between the white and black pieces anymore, and he wonders if there was ever such a distinction. His opponent is shrewd, and he never sees his face. Or maybe he has just forgotten. Perhaps he was made to have forgotten. It certainly would not have been a surprise, and G holds back a growl, hand shaking as he reaches for a pawn, a rook or maybe a bishop to move. But there is none.

The Queen mocks him with her splendor: slender and majestic and pure as it was molded from white marble. His hand never reaches for this one piece, but he never allows it to remain only by the side of the King. The King is to be protected; it is to be honored. Always. Forever.

The King, the Storm Guardian laments, is the most important of the pieces and ironically, it is also the weakest link. It determines the victory, it determines the loss, but whatever strength it may possess, it is powerless against the charge of the opponent's army, unable to do anything but watch its own people walk forth to their deaths.

Pawns fall one by one. Estranged, it is tipped over, and yet it stands once more, stubborn with its many clones. G fails to notice how this little yet powerful army disappears to the other end, followed by the Bishop blindly following and just as blindly sacrificed. The swift knight is much too late, leaping from square to square only to trip over the many carcasses on the board, and it falls.

The rook is violent, and it is possessive, but it does not charge on. The redhead does not make it so. Instead, he keeps the rook, made into a careful barrier between the King and its terrifying shadow.

"Mmm~ it's lovely to know you're actually as sharp as you are famed for, fufufufu."

He grits his teeth, and he ignores his shaking hands on his knees as the tapping of invisible pieces move forward, and G is not certain how long he will be able to stand between the endless sky and its encumbering mist.
