Modern Medicine (Closed to Arthur)

Feb 01, 2013 23:31

Gwen was both excited and nervous about this. She had read in her books that medicine had advanced so much that they could check on the baby throughout pregnancy with a lot more ease. Back in Camelot there is little anyone can do to make sure the baby is safe and well at all times. Here? Here they could check on things with ease. But today was ( Read more... )

Arthur had little idea what to expect. Guinevere had tried to explain some of it and given him some reading materials, but he had gotten embarrassed by some of the discussions and illustrations in the books and did not get very far in them. All he knew was that medicine was better here than at home, involved more technology, and should keep both Guinevere and the baby healthy and safe.

He hoped that was right.

Noticing that Guinevere seemed a little nervous, Arthur smiled over at her and took her hand, trying to project calmness to her even though he was fairly tense, himself.

She turned to look at Arthur at the touch of his hand and smiled. She had almost forgotten they were here together. But it helped, it really did. She gave him a gentle squeeze of his hand and soon they were being taken in to be seen. She knew that there were two ways of checking a baby and part of her rather hoped it was not the more embarrassing one of internally. Luckily it seemed not as she could see the equipment. She sat on the bed when indicated, glancing at Arthur.

"First time, isn't it?" the woman asked with a kind voice.

Gwen simply nodded.

From where he stood beside Guinevere, out of the way of the nurse, Arthur glanced curiously around at the room, though his eyes went back to Gwen and the nurse at the question.

The nurse, whose I.D. badge said her name was Louisa, smiled at Guinevere's nod. "There'll be a lot to take in today, but we'll do our best to explain everything, and feel free to ask if you have any questions, okay?"

After that, she outlined how the appointment was going to go. Arthur listened intently, but did not interrupt; some of it seemed a little confusing, but he expected that it would seem clearer as it happened. If not, he would inquire about it then.

“Okay,” Gwen replied, her voice still quiet. At least she would explain it all. Would talk her through how things would go. And she had Arthur. Arthur seemed determined to be with her every step of the way and she appreciated it. she wasn’t quite sure she could do this alone. Normally, in Camelot, if a woman wanted company during similar visits the husband would not be the one to accompany. It would potentially be a female family member or friend. She was happy she could have Arthur here.

She listened to what the midwife had to say then glanced at Arthur to see him taking it all in as if he wanted to make sure he understood it all too. She had to wonder if he also felt like paying so much attention in case she forgot. Not that she was likely to but it was nice to have his support.

Their next appointment had come by, a few weeks going past incredibly fast. Whilst she felt nervous for it, she would be every time, she wasn't quite as nervous as she had been the first time. She knew and understood a bit more on what to expect. So she waited quietly with Arthur, again looking around the waiting area as they waited their turn. When they were called, Gwen was happy to see they had managed to gain the same midwife. She had heard that some women go through different women, or men, at every appointment so Gwen was simply glad that they had managed to keep the person they had spent time with.

She was told to go straight onto the bed, as she did last time, and she settled without comment.

"How have things been then?" Louisa asked. "Felling okay?"

Gwen nodded, giving her a smile. "It seems to have calmed slightly."

She had the same problems that she knew most women had, nothing out of the ordinary.

At least, this appointment seemed to be a bit more straightforward. Not that Arthur did not mind the information they had been provided with last time, but he was still trying to absorb some of it.

Louisa was noting a few things down, then asked, "Any cravings?"

Gwen glanced at Arthur with that. He had been nothing but kind about her strange moods and her need for certain foods. At least the recent one wasn't too bad.

"The past few days it has mostly been melon with jam." Which seems okay to her at least, but of course it would.

Arthur gave her a brief grin at both the question and the answer. It was not a food combination he would have expected, but it made her happy and he did not mind fixing it even at odd hours of the night.
